Cancel “Rice” - Owl1998 - 06-20-2020 05:10 PM

Since Jesse Kelly helped turn the tables on the woke crowd with his #CancelYale campaign, some have suggested a #CancelRice campaign. What do you think? It’s the new rules right? Eliminate anything related to historical racism. Can’t wait to hear some of our “progressive” members views on this topic.

#CancelRice!

Related discussion (re: the recent demand to, inter alia, remove Willy's statue) in progress in the Quad, feel free to join in. Probably not germane on the main sports board.

Houston removed a Christopher Columbus statue today. Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Willy gets removed.

A U. S. Grant statue was toppled in San Francisco.

A George Washington statue was toppled in Portland.

William Marsh Rice's ashes are interred under his statue, which should be considered a part of his grave marker. In fact, Rice University is considered the largest private cemetery in Houston because WMR is buried there. Removing his statue would deface a grave site and would be a crime under Texas Law without the permission of next of kin or the University in this case. I am not a lawyer, but the University may need a court order to move his grave site.

Why is "progressive" in scare quotes?
Why is the word "progressive" included in your OP at all? Are you under the impression that progressive policy positions and taking down statues have something in common?
Are you aware that most (i'm guessing VAST majority) who identify as progressive are not in favor, or at least don't have a strong opinion, on statues?
Are you aware that we have The Quad for topics such as this?

That has to be a joke right? You can just look at any news source and see thats not true.

"Any news source" != majority of progressive public opinion.
Please show me polling on progressives' support for removal of ... of what? All statues? Some statues (which ones)? If you can find polling that shows a majority of progressives supporting removing majority of historical-figure statues, I'll be surprised and gladly shut up. If the claim is that majority of progressives support removing the handful of most egregious statues, then that *may* be true, sure, (though I'd like to see polling still), but then we're outside the scope of the OP, which was Rice-specific

Anyone who doesn't like the statue, doesn't have to look at the statue.

Contrary to what you see on the news.. the majority of Americans (77%) approve of the policing in their community. The majority of Americans do not support defunding police. 81% oppose eliminating the police.

85% of Dems (what do progressives identify as?) think confederate statues should be removed (just hit 52% overall). 81% of Dems think army bases shouldn’t be named after confederate figures.

Progressives in San Fran tore down statues of Grant and Francis Scott Key.

Thanks for those links! I *am* a bit surprised, the support is stronger than I guessed. The Quinnipiac poll is particularly interesting. (The other links are hard to learn from, since they are about specific statues and don't tell us about who did it or how broad the support was)

So, it turns out there is very strong support among Dems (and presumably progressives) for removing the most egregious (Confederate?) statues. It may also surprise OP that this is actually the majority opinion of Americans. Seems fine, but opens the much harder question of which statues beyond Confederate leaders are the most egregious. On that, I'd guess Americans have much less consensus.

I am getting tired of the iconoclasts. It is getting too far when George Washington and Grant are pulled down. The 54th Mass. statute was spray painted. The Vandals do not know what they do.

I'm not convinced that the perpetrators are from the "left". There have been those on the far right who have done vandalizing and killing, hoping to start a "race war".

But, I'm done with commenting here. Off to the Quad ....

Francis Scott Key? Oh, yeah, he composed that horrible song that progressives kneel to. No wonder they pulled him down.

Well, let’s put it this way....it’s damn sure not Conservatives who are tearing down statues and graffitiing buildings. It’s damn sure not Conservatives who started the whole “cancel” culture. It’s damn sure not Conservatives who hijacked the legitimacy of the George Floyd protests and used it as a platform for mayhem.

Agree? Or no?

RE: Cancel “Rice” - Owl1998 - 06-21-2020 07:24 AM

The point of all this is to say that, yet again, the left overplays their hand. The cancel culture is all the rage until it hits your own front door. The Cancel Yale movement is the beginning of conservatives fighting back against the ridiculous desire to eliminate all things “bad” in our country’s history. Believe it or not, we (Conservatives) know there’s a ton of horrible things in our history. Tearing down the statues does nothing to “fix” it.

I mean, seriously...Aunt Jamima? Really? The left will destroy this country if common sense people don’t fight back.

So, since “thems tha rules” the left wants, let’s play along. Rice needs to change the name of the University. If you don’t agree, you hate Black people just like it’s namesake.

Who’s with me? Cancel Rice!

RE: Cancel “Rice” - Viejobuho - 06-21-2020 10:42 AM

If I am not mistaken, I was the first Puerto Rican (born and raised in Puerto Rico) to attend Rice, after, I guess, Rice lifted its race limitations. Long ago, I forgave William Marsh, focusing instead on what a blessing it was for me to graduate from the great university that Rice became!

Absolutely! Unfortunately, common sense has been obliterated by factions of radical, woke, imbeciles with zero awareness of the historical importance of a country that has overcome its initial horrors only to produce the greatest country the world has ever known.
