Nice get, Coaches!

RE: Transfer portal - BearcatMan - 05-12-2021 10:24 PM

Averaged 7/6 in the ACC as a sophomore...yeah, I'll take that for sure. Fills a role which we sorely needed in a rebounder/banger...kind of seems a little Clarkish to me.

If it’s big uglies that we need, I’m not big but I have the other half of the equation well covered. 04-rock

Lulled us to sleep for a couple of weeks. Nice get. How many more to fill?

RE: Transfer portal - OKIcat - 05-13-2021 07:11 AM

Great news. Fills a critical need on this team.

Hope springs eternal for fans but you have to like what's been added since Miller's arrival combined with the guys that are back. I think we'll see the returning players take their game to the next level in a more positive environment that embraces the traditions of Bearcat defense and toughness. I believe this year's team will surprise many by exceeding what will likely be tepid pre-season expectations.

Gets us to 12 unless Rob Banks’ scholarship is only a one semester atta boy.

If they need his scholarship, they'll utilize it.

I believe RB was informed when he received the good news that it may not be permanent. We'll see.

According to Justin Williams' article today, Miller plans to honor the scholarship (my reading of that was at least for the upcoming season).

I feel bad for the position Brannen left Miller in on the Banks situation. Banks clearly is not qualified for a scholly at UC and I hate giving one out as a charity, especially in basketball in the year of the transfer and everything else going on with the program. But I'm sure Miller knows its a bad look to take it away from him. I keep wondering whats going on with Vic.

Maybe. There is some logic to it though. Transfer portal will still be a thing next season and if it doesn't work out you open a spot for next year. UC went from basically nothing on the roster to a pretty full roster where nearly everyone can play 3 or 4 more seasons here if they want and the staff wants it. On the roster right now only Koval would be ineligible to play beyond next season (assuming he gets the waiver to play this year).

Not trying to be negative, but I just don't see this roster doing much damage. Hope I'm wrong though.

Let's see what a real coach can do for a guy like Banks. Has to be better than the former passive, aggressive gulag gang leader was.

What do you mean by "too much" damage? I think it's clearly an upgraded, deeper roster from last season. I'm optimistic with development of the guys who have been here and a few new guys proving a good fit, they'll be competing for a tournament bid. I don't think you're going to be watching a team struggle to finish a game over .500.

No way to tell how they will do. There is no mega stars on the roster. But BB is a team game. How will they mesh. Remember in the 60's OSU had Lucas and Hondo whp were such stars they played at the top of the NBA for well over 10 years. UC had no player in the NBA play beyond a backup for a couple years.

But UC had the better TEAM.

RE: Transfer portal - skyblade - 05-13-2021 09:55 AM

I think putting the pieces together will the struggle for next season. New coach, plus a bunch of new players isn't usually a recipe for tons of success. I see this year as preparation for JD's senior year, where he should be a star and we should have a chance to be really good. If we sneak our way into the NCAA tournament this year, great, but as long as well are competitive and show improvement I won't be upset if we end up in the NIT.

Ody is a nice addition, but the interior is still my biggest concern. Memphis/Houston can be dominant against smaller, less athletic teams. I'm not sure Ody/Koval/JD/Hensley and maybe Lakhin is quite enough. Perhaps it won't matter if we play small and take advantages of mismatches.

Yeah...I really don't see a place where we are worse off than last year on this roster honestly. I think DDJ and JD can pick up the scoring load, our interior defense/rebounding will be improved, and Madsen and Saunders have a year of better training and conditioning plus comfort in the program.

That very well may be. I don't necessarily expect them to definitely make the tournament, but I think they'll be in the hunt. I could see them being an NIT team. I could see them sneaking into the tournament if things click early enough.

Looks like Ody's got some hang time:

RE: Transfer portal - geef - 05-13-2021 11:07 AM

Nabbing Ody is huge, and gives us a solid roster. Now we can truly wait for an impact piece, or still be fine if not.

The key, in mind, is a healthy Newman. If so, we're probably looking at a starting five of DDJ, MAW, Newman, Davenport, and Ody. The rotation is likely rounded out by Saunders and Madsen, two players who were really hitting their stride at the end of last year; a rim protector in Koval who can probably give 15 quality minutes a game; and McGinnis, a guy who was likely going to be one of UNCG's top scorers next year. Any development by Hensley and Lahkin at the 3/4 and 4/5 would be absolute gravy. I'm pumped.
