I really don't know much about any of the X players but as I recall he was pretty highly regarded coming out of high school. Any idea what the issue was with him @ X? It's not like the Mouseketeers are so talented, deep, and tournament successful that he couldn't carve out playing time if he's truly great.

Among the most annoying spam calls of all. If I ever accepted the call and spoke with them I'd love to hear what they want to charge me for a warranty on my nine year old vehicle with 100,000+ miles on the odometer. LOL, My co-pay for each repair would probably be $600.00.

With those numbers he seems like he should be able to play at any number of high major programs. Unless Brannen has some special connection I'm not sure why he'd come here.

Yeah, but you still have to try. Relationships are big in recruiting, so if our coaching staff connects with him, you never know. Penny and Sampson have both landed big-time transfers. I'm sure DeJulius had other options as well.

Also, the fact that we don't have an alpha scorer could be attractive to him. He can come be the man on a roster that should be more than talented enough to make the tournament with him on the team.

Scheme fit, connections to staff, etc.

There are many reasons why people pick a school...one might say it was a little perplexing that some of the guys who went to Arkansas did. I mean, sure it's not a high likelihood, but if there's even a small chance you could get a guy like that at a position of need with about the best general fit you could ask for, you have to try. My guess is he ends up back home at Pitt or somewhere in the Big East, but man...don't lock the door before it has even been closed.

Transfer portal - Cataclysmo - 03-15-2021 01:02 PM

Agreed. I just see him as being pretty far outside the realm of possibilities. It would be a homerun if they did land someone of that caliber.

I mean we had a 7’1” starter tally 0 points and only 1 rebound yesterday. The bar for game changer is probably not super high.

You also don't need to replace a 7'1" Chris Vogt with another 7'1" center. If anything, Vogt sort of proved that being 7'1" and a center in the traditional sense is a worse fit at the five for Brannen's system than, say, a player who's more of a power forward at 6'9" and like 220 or 230 lbs.

I've never seen Tre Mitchell play a second of basketball but if he plays more like Tari Eason and less like Chris Vogt, I'd bring him immediately.

RE: Transfer portal - JFlight21 - 03-15-2021 02:29 PM

Honestly, all the players I've seen UC connected with so far as short guards that can't shoot. It's early (I know) but seems like a complete waste of time to recruit any of those guys or maybe the staff has no idea what they want. They should be all over Cam'Ron Fletcher, Aidan Igiehon, Au'Diese Toney, Greg Gantt, etc. but I've seen nothing so far...

Well, I mean, two of those only announced their intentions inside the last 24 hours...so...I wouldn't say we're not talking to them or looking at them. Brannen was a little busy yesterday. I also love that you say we've only been connected to guards who are bad shooters, then you list three who are guards and bad shooters. Looks like you don't know what you want either 03-lmfao 04-cheers.

I would agree about Igiehon though...he fits a definite need, even if he needs to be developed further.

Ha! Well Fletcher, Tony and Gantt are all wings - big, athletic, wings and that is a massive need. If you can't shoot as a wing it's a little different than say Antonio Daye, who is 6'1 and shot under 29% from 3.

Frankly, Houston yesterday showed we have the market cornered on small guards that can't shoot (Saunders and DeJulius) and we really need to improve our athleticism. Don't get me wrong - I like Saunders going forward but priorities 1 - 100 should be athletes on the wing and the interior.

RE: Transfer portal - JFlight21 - 03-15-2021 02:44 PM

Well looks like UC has now reached out to Fletcher. He'd be a great wing to pair as a compliment to Gabe (if he comes back). Going to be a wild few weeks.

I agree...we need to fill up with 6'6"-6'10" athletic dudes who can fill passing and driving lanes. We definitely don't need any guards at all given our roster composition, and I'd argue we should be trying to get a natural pair for Eason before any other guys at this point in things.

I would add, we can't afford to add anyone to the rotation outside of a starting center who can't shoot the 3 at a decent clip. We finished the season at 31.1%, which is 288th in Division I. In today's game, unless your roster is littered with top 50 recruits with overwhelming athleticism, you have to shoot the 3 at a respectable clip to be a good offensive team. If we can bring that up to 34 or 35%, Eason will be much more effective in the paint and guys like Saunders will have more opportunities to drive the lane and draw fouls. We are also ranked 316th in free throw percentage. We give away so many points at the free throw lane. So my two biggest requests are a starting center who can play above-average defense, and better shooting. Of course, rim protectors and lengthy 3-point shooters will be in high demand, so it's not an easy ask.

Yeah...a 5-out or pick-entry offense would make Saunders an incredibly valuable guard piece. Can't have something like that with a guy like Vogt (which is why I'd be willing to take a recruiting violation to get Tre Mitchell, who reminds me more of Christian Wood than anyone I've seen at Center/Big ever).

I've watched video of Tre Mitchell, and he's the real deal. There will be some big names sniffing around him. I agree with Cataclysmo that it will be a reach to bring him here, but I hope we at least try.
