I also saw him listed at 6'7.

Shades of Edwards?

RE: MBB Recruiting - Bawlmer Duke - 05-12-2023 05:59 AM

Mettlen hasn’t heard from Archie

Wrote this though…

JMU looks to fill its final scholarships, some potentially interesting players have entered the transfer portal in the past week. Among them are 6-4 guard Jaylin Sellers, who averaged 13.5 points this season at Ball State, 6-4 Kansas City guard Shemarri Allen (17 ppg), Mississippi State freshman Martavious Russell and Saint Peter’s guard Jaylen Murray (12.5 ppg).

There are also still Class of 2023 high school players who could remain on the Dukes’ radar including Jayden Reid, a three-star point guard from Long Island and former Ole Miss commit Jordan Burks.

good pick up. Still has 2 years to play, maybe 3 with the covid year.

He appears to be a flexor like Edwards. 03-lmfao

RE: MBB Recruiting - Hart Foundation - 05-12-2023 08:52 AM

He played 20 minutes per game for a 30 win team so that is a good sign, but I don’t recall him in the games I’ve watched over the past 2 years.
The more competition for playing time, the better.

If Byington can land another shooter then this team can be dangerous on offense. I think the parts are already there to be good again on defense and keep the high pressure style.

RE: MBB Recruiting - Dukes84 - 05-12-2023 09:25 AM

The timing of Archie's release is a bit strange (late in the process)...perhaps he backed out because of addition of Michael Green. I know when he committed he was rated as a top 35 combo guard nationally, so to lose him is disappointing.

According to Mettlen, Horton was a prime recruiting target for the Dukes. In what little video of I've seen of him, he's athletic and he's a solid 3-point shooter. With him, Dukes now have 8 guys on the roster listed at 6-6 or bigger.

If I'm Byington, I use the last scholarship on either a point guard or a combo guard. He can either do that in transfer portal or thru HS ranks. Transfer portal is clearly ready-made to add impactful players. I noticed that one Rick Pitino has now added 9 transfers to the St. John's roster, including the nation's second leading scorer. He's also added in a top 100 HS kid. One of the 9 transfers was actually a VMI player, as bad as that team was last year.

I think it goes to show what Byington said before. The portal is causing guys like Archie to initially get passed up. Problem is that's only initially, and now other schools are likely filling gaps.

As of now Archie has offers from Tulsa, FIU, and LA Tech. Not sure what to make of that given changes that the portal and Covid eligibility have had on the HS recruiting scene.

His best offers before signing were St. Louis, VCU, Buffalo then a bunch of lower level midmajors. Maybe his offers are a little worse now? He’ll have options again but I guess it was personal circumstances or roster outlook which probably pushed him out. Certainly hope he lands somewhere outside the SBC.

Started 99 games in his career and only made 6 three pointers all totalled through 4 seasons. Guessing Byington needed another reliable ball handler.

Nice that he’s not bombing 3s like everyone in the sport, but kind of scary that you have a guard that won’t even attempt them which limits how and when you use him. Can’t shoot a 3 and is a poor free throw shooter so he’ll be subbed out in crunch time.

Fess Irvin syndrome. He'd shoot from 18 ft, but rarely ever from the then 19'9" three point line distance.

RE: MBB Recruiting - Bawlmer Duke - 05-16-2023 05:30 AM

Can’t please this group. All last season there was plenty of we want less hero ball 1v1

RE: MBB Recruiting - Centdukesfan - 05-16-2023 07:43 AM

He shot 50% from the field the last two years and averaged 3 assists per game. I dont hate it that much. Not every player needs to be chucking threes.

I dont really care for the fact that we have more transfers than high school recruits. I would prefer we cultivate talent here rather than end up as a graduate transfer landing pad.

RE: MBB Recruiting - Dukes84 - 05-16-2023 08:22 AM

Randleman fits the profile of Byington player in that he plays fast and attacks. In his 4 year career, averaged 1.6 steals in Year 3, as well as 3.4 assists that same year. His FG% has improved and he doesn't take a lot of shots. Has decent athleticism and plays hard. I thought JMU needed another point guard after losing Archie.

RE: MBB Recruiting - MarginalDuke - 05-16-2023 09:29 AM

Overall, I am very pleased with how Byington has formed this roster. I can’t wait for basketball season to start up again! Did I just say that?
