Is that $10 million for this past year, or is that total representing multiple years of shortfalls in their athletic department?

We won't be the first and we won't be the last to do so based what is going down nation wide with the pandemic, but in our case, the issues started with the previous AD and chancellor regime and a politically interesting BoT makeup coming together in a whirlwind of a storm that the pandemic has done nothing more than exacerbate further.

And, realistically, we are dropping down the minimum of 16 sponsored sports.

What I had read said you were going from 20 to 19, but you think you'll drop 4 sports?

I feel 60% confident they are axing down to the bare minimum they have to sponsor to be Title IX complaint and be a full member. There will be other cost cutting measures too. I don't know if they will tier it out, but I fully expect that to be the end game.

The Compher hire and era was a disaster with a lot of collateral damage.

Furman cut baseball and men's lacrosse yesterday.

You are right ECU won't be the the only school cutting sports but I'd venture to guess many of the schools that end up dropping sports had the TV revenue that ECU is getting as a member of the AAC.

I agree with your second post that the AD was a disaster and hope ECU can turn things around. The more NC schools that can genuinely put up a fight against the ACC schools the better. I'm sure some of my other Charlotte alumni will disagree with me but that is my thoughts on the matter.

I'm hoping baseball is safe given the success that program has achieved through the years.

I envision that the "savings" will be put back into football and mens and womens basketball to advance them. Advancing them will have a trickle down effect to all other programs left. Baseball is more than competitive in and out of conference and after the batting complex got added to the stadium there aren't really too many buildings that they need but there will be some facility upkeep needs.

Not all schools can be P6.

No, more like making your revenue sports better to generate more revenue. Any program is going to have to invest in itself.

That said, I highly doubt that on the same day they cut sports they go we are building that IPF starting tomorrow.

clt is hearing that PeeDee the Pirate has joined a Somalian piracy in an attempt to raise funds.

peedee is struggling to fit in tho, because his purple attire is leading to bullying from the other pirates.

RE: ECU cutting sport - MinerInWisconsin - 05-20-2020 03:02 PM

I feel for ECU and they are not alone. All of us are going to feel the pinch. I also miss the games with ECU with half court winning shots in mbb to late game heroics in fb. Of course the Miners had a pulse back then and those games felt almost like a rivalry. ECU had excellent fb crowds.

Bruh, the ECU UTEP games were things of legend. Especially that one game when the Miners came here and UTEP was down to 3rd string water boy coaching the team by the time all the ejections were done LOL.

That crazy football game at your place was dubbed the Miracle in the Mine Shaft I believe when we came back on you guys. And if memory serves me correctly, there was that crazy lightning delay game here.

Somali Pirates aren't pulling down that kind of bank anymore. We need to get on one of these History or discovery channel shows looking for gold! LOL

Dolly Parton has that Pirates Voyage dinner show, maybe PeeDee can get on there

Can you bring your labrodoodle? Maybe he/she and PeeDee can do a cage fight and donate the proceeds to ECU Athletics.

I hope the ODU fans don't see this thread, or they will be screaming to regionalize the AAC before they are even considered for an invite. 05-stirthepot

RE: ECU cutting sport - Cyniclone - 05-21-2020 11:25 AM

ECU is cutting men’s and women’s tennis and swimming/diving

Surrounded by ODU to the north and Charlotte to the west, tennis never had a chance

RE: ECU cutting sport - ImfromClayton - 05-21-2020 11:48 AM

I like making fun of the pirates as much as anyone, but this is just good business.

Almost wish we would do it....

Now that 10 million in debt, that's funny, and is def a major issue. lol
