I am surprised there weren’t more controls available to the moderator to either block additional callers or just mute everyone unless you’re presenting.

Given the emotions involved, it's not that far fetched to imagine some of the disruption was perpetuated by the scorned student athletes themselves. There wasn't any disruption on the call until the first request for chat features to be re-enabled. If anyone on the call hadn't realized they still had access to an open mic at that point, they sure did after. It seemed to me that is when things really went off the track.

100%. If you were paying closely attention, the trolls started after the administration disabled the chatroom where it was pointed out about baseball needed for D1 membership. The players probably did it themselves as a last resort to stall the meeting after the moderator pulled those shenanigans.

It's pretty short-sighted on their part, if so. The business will now be done behind closed doors and there is justification for it. That's not to say they didn't already intend to move the athletics conversation to executive session, which I 1000% believe was probably the plan anyway. If it was players and families doing the disruption, they gave the board valid reason for having that conversation and vote offline and NOBODY gets to hear the hows and whys of the thought process.

If Illinois laws are like those in states with which I m familiar, the vote cannot be taken in executive session, but must be taken in a public meeting. That doesn't preclude them from discussing what they would do, then taking it up for vote in the public meeting with little or no further discussion. Happens way too frequently, but it meets the technical requirement of the law.

Easier for me to paste this.

Wow... So, they are going to leave the kids and families in limbo for at least another month, if not well into the next school year. Insult to injury if they do eventually decide to axe the program.

They got themselves painted into a corner. They pretty much had to punt on this one at this time.

Their options were
1. to go ahead and vote to axe baseball, putting them out of compliance with being a D1 program
2. Vote not to eliminate baseball creating potential issues regarding finances.
3. Direct the AD and senior administrators to present them with a proposal to deal with whatever the issue is ($$$$ ?) and that allows them to remain D1 or an option that includes dropping down to D2 or D3.
4. Something else that wasn't likely to be well accepted.

By tabling it, I believe they essentially are calling for option 3.

Forget budgets and teams. How long will Chicago State's athletic director last?

Fired local celebrity Chris Zorich for a guy who doesn’t even know the requirements for Division 1 membership.

I would love to hear what exactly was going on. I bet it would be interesting!

Unless there’s a source to indicate the new AD was all in on this as well— then let’s not jump to conclusions (though I know it’s easy to do).

Based off this post— it seemed as if the AD wasn’t informed of the plan either.

I agree. This buys time at least for planning. It would be a gut punch to the student athletes to cut the program with literally no time for changes.
This ordeal is really going to make it difficult for the team next year — assuming survival— as I’m sure players are looking at transferring now.

Just to point out that "2 team sports per gender" is a NCAA rule for ALL divisions.

Even if Chicago St is out of any compliance with teams, they won’t be the last after we’re done with corona.

Nope but they will be shown the door and hopefully they land in a nice NAIA league.

A 5th option would have been to not put it on the agenda. That would have been the intelligent decision. D1, D2 and D3 require two team sports per gender. Dropping baseball cannot happen for Chicago State at any level. They were paying their baseball coach about $67,000 per year. The baseball budget could not have been more than $500,000 per year.

They looked completely unprepared for the meeting. The board came off looking really incompetent. What are you accomplishing with this move? What are the ramifications? How does this work with your short term and long term strategic goals? I listened in on part of the meeting and it was a trainwreck.

Not that I want Chicago St to drop baseball, but what are less expensive men's team sports? Are there any? Men's v-ball would need to be less expensive simply due to a smaller team.

From the other thread, here are the NCAA "team sports" of which a school must have two for each gender:
Baseball
Basketball
Women’s Beach Volleyball
Field Hockey
Football
Ice Hockey
Lacrosse
Women’s Rowing
Women’s Rugby
Soccer
Softball
Volleyball
Water Polo

I would imagine that both sports would be less expensive than baseball. But these sports would also bring in fewer tuition paying student-athletes. Although I think that Kentucky used to have 40 males on their soccer team, it brought in a ton of money for the program in the way of tuition.

Water polo. team relay swimming, LAX

Both volleyball and soccer might be more expensive than baseball with the upkeep.

There is NCAA noise about suspending the minimum D-1 requirements under the circumstances. There’s also pushback, and I have no idea how that will turn out. Just FYI...

Highly doubtful they will reduce (or suspend) the team sports per gender from the current minimum of 2. Also; that is a NCAA requirement, not a D1 requirement.

NCAA allowed Tulane to drop several sports below the minimum post katrina. Tulane then added sports back that were a "better fit." I suppose they could lop off a womens team sport to balance it out.

RE: Chicago St to discuss athletics today in Board of Trustees Meeting - 18 May 2020 - Stugray2 - 05-19-2020 06:11 PM

I am always surprised Chicago State doesn't drop down to D-II or NAIA. They simply cannot support a D-I program. Or they really should not on their limited resources, none existent donor and fan base, plus very small student body:

Number of Full-time Undergraduates: 1,287
Men: 433
Women: 854

Source: US Department of Education, Equity in Athletics

Athletic Student Aid: $2,813,133

Comparison with Governors State $304,840 for Athletic Student Aid in NAIA. Salaries are $794,104 at Chicago State versus $179,001 at Governors State.

Dropping to NAIA Chicagoland should save at least $3M per year in expenses, although they'd lose $500-600K in D-I revenue. Still that would basically free $2M or more the administration is using to support Athletics. Gate is almost $0, ditto donations, so that is hardly a reason.
