OT: BGSU Cuts Baseball program - BearcatMan - 05-15-2020 01:33 PM

A program with far more success in their history than our own team, and with an actual stadium on their main campus...

Quote:BGSU eliminates baseball, announces athletics restructuring
12 min ago

Bowling Green State University today announced that it has eliminated the baseball program effective immediately.

This action is being taken as part of a plan for a $2 million reduction to the operating budget of the intercollegiate athletics department.

“This was a very difficult, but necessary, decision,” said Director of Athletics Bob Moosbrugger. “As a baseball alumnus, my heart breaks for the families affected by this decision. We will ensure the student-athletes in the program have support during this challenging time. We will honor their scholarship agreements through graduation and, should they pursue their collegiate baseball career elsewhere, we will assist in the process of finding a new home.”

With the change, BGSU will now sponsor 17 NCAA Division I sports (six men’s sports and 11 women’s sports). The move affects 34 student-athletes and three coaches.

“While we remain committed to supporting Division I athletics programs, we must do this in a financially sustainable approach,” said BGSU President Rodney Rogers. “We have made the difficult decision to eliminate the baseball program due to financial constraints. This decision was not made lightly, and does not reflect the rich history of the program, including five Mid-American Conference championships and four NCAA regional appearances.”

Also today, BGSU announced the restructuring of the Department of Recreation and Wellness to the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

“We have spent the recent days identifying opportunities to align functional areas to share resources and streamline practices,” Rogers said. “I have also asked Bob Moosbrugger to assume an expanded role as director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Recreation and Wellness. He will now provide oversight for all athletic facility operations and integrate our student recreation and wellness programs to focus on physical wellness of not just our Division I student-athletes, but each student.”

BGSU Athletics Restructure F AQ:

What sport is being discontinued and how was that determined?

• The sport of baseball will be discontinued. The university is undergoing restructuring brought on by the current financial crisis. Athletics was instructed to reduce its annual budget by $2 million.

•The decision to eliminate baseball came after careful review examining a wide range of criteria, including: financial impact, support services needed, facilities, equity and a comparison of Mid-American Conference (MAC) sport sponsorship.

•The elimination of baseball will result in an athletics budget cost savings of approximately $500,000 annually.

•The elimination of baseball will reduce stress on already-taxed support services including academic, strength & conditioning, athletic training, facilities and game operations whose budgets and personnel will be affected by all decisions.

How many people are affected by this decision? What support are they being provided?

•The entire BGSU Athletics community is affected by this painful decision.

•Those directly affected include: two full-time coaches, a part-time assistant and 34 student-athletes and their families.

•BGSU will honor current athletic scholarships for student-athletes who wish to continue their studies at BGSU.

•We will provide assistance to any student-athlete interested in continuing their athletic pursuits elsewhere. Per NCAA rules, student-athletes who transfer because their athletic program has been eliminated will be able to compete immediately.

•For incoming baseball student-athletes, BGSU will honor the scholarship agreement that was signed with the NLI and honor the terms of that agreement. Per the NLI provisions, the BGSU NLI is “null and void” which will allow signees to accept a scholarship offer from another institution should they wish.

And look at what they D/C’d. 5 MAC titles and NCAA success. Why do we linger with our 0 MAC titles and 0 NCAA appearances. The most unsuccessful program in UT history. Including WFH! IMHO

Difference between UT and Akron/BG is that they are over the NCAA minimum of 16 sports. Akron had 20, BG 18. There are other MAC schools over the minimum also. UT has no place to go. How do you save money? I know there are some schools who don't give the maximum number of scholarships in every sport. Are there NCAA minimums? Baseball has 11.7 scholarships, but does UT fully fund the sport-BG didn't.

The P5 conferences are just lapping this kind of stuff up, hoping the mid majors force themselves to DII. So they don't have to deal with us and keep all the $ for themselves. Sorry to hear BG is cutting a main sport. Oral Hershiser has to be pissed.

Save $500 K. Add a year to Candle deferring half of this 2020 21 salary. Do the same for Cullop and TK. That would save close to a million total

Nobody living in Toledo needs to make the money Candle makes. Another year of security for short term pain not a huge price

Yep.

Whether it’s a drop as far as DII or the creation of a new NCAA level that’s a cut below P5, this was moving in they direction since the distinction was made between P5 and G5. COVID-19 will just speed this along a bit faster.

And people have been coming after me for suggesting that the MAC should consider moving to FCS. It would allow us to drop two sports and significantly cut back on scholarships overall while not really affecting the competition level we face on a day to day basis.

The AAC now has zero chance of joining the elite and making a P6. Covid killed that as well and that means a true limbo for the AAC. The MAC is not going to FCS.

Not sure why the AAC is being brought up...they've always been in limbo with their unsustainably large budgets and middling TV revenue. MAC is in divisional limbo without an NCAA bailout in the form of relaxed rules, and those who don't believe so arent looking at things objectively.

Maybe UT can pick up some of their players? Couldn't hurt.

Yeah, we may be able to go above .500 now for once.

I 100% agree bcunn. The P5 conferences will just pull farther ahead and we'll be in a completely different division and cut out of the major revenue pie.

What I am sniffing? A way to survive short term pain when we can’t cut a sport. Do I like extending all these coaches another year? Not really. But these are the highest paid coaches we have.

I am all for the MAC dropping to FCS status where most of the schools belong!!!!!!! But Toledo should remain FBS because it one of the very few if not the only one that IS actually or can operate at the FBS status. Toledo's Women's BB average attendance is larger than 10 of Men's BB teams of the MAC...….

Here's a hypothetical.....and it could happen.....maybe not. If BG were to drop to FCS, do you think SOME of the marketing money that it competes for with UT would then start going to Toledo's coffers????

RE: OT: BGSU Cuts Baseball program - utrocks84 - 05-16-2020 06:40 PM

WHY can't the MAC stay FBS and drop programs that can't and add some either from FCS that want to move up or from AAC and C-USA. Teams like UC, Temple, UConn, NAvy, WKU, maybe Old Dominion, Marshall. Make a better conference logistically and competitively than the MAC, AAC or C-USA is now. By reducing travel for C-USA and AAC and having better regional marketing for them within their conferences it may enable a really good football and basketball conference and reduce travel for non revenue sports. This maybe wacky, but something like this would be one way to keep UT, Buffalo and who every can meet standards for a more elite conference that in time could compete with P5 schools due to media draws from where these schools are located. PICK YOUR BEST WISH LIST FOR A NEW CONFERENCE FOR TOLEDO. Those non P5 schools available.

I think most of the schools in the MAC want to stay FBS and will do everything they can to stay there. Now if we can't get the virus under control and students on campus, then all bets are off.
