Opinion: SLC misses opportunity with Tarleton - TexasTerror - 05-08-2020 04:27 PM

Sometimes the answer is staring you in the face.

In the Southland Conference's case, a solution to what I see as an issue was staring at it from about 120 miles southwest of the league headquarters in Frisco, Texas, in Stephenville.

Late in 2019, Tarleton State University announced that its athletic program would make the move up to Division I from Division II. The Texans will move from the Lone Star Conference to the Western Athletic Conference for most sports, while football will not yet join a conference, remaining as an independent Football Championship Subdivision program.

Good read. We discussed this in another thread; that Tarleton was basically begging to be let into the SLC at one point. Lonn wanted it bad. Joining the WAC instead was heavily favored by Chancellor Sharp, and its starting to make sense as to why. Us Tarleton fans need to be prepared for football becoming a FBS program (in the WAC) after the D2>FCS transition period is over. Some if the SLC teams mentioned in this article may very well be joining us.

With the WAC actually having a golden ticket to the FBS (whenever we finally choose to have it stamped), Tarleton State has an opportunity to leap frog over some of the Texas schools (in the SLC) who were higher up in the food chain.

Tarleton at the FBS level. If/when it happens that'll take some getting used to.

But that's just it, those schools are "higher up in the food chain" in name only. Tarleton outgrew D2 and the Lone Star ccnference a long time ago. We consistently beat FCS teams in the SLC, and would definitely compete with any team in the Big Sky. It was only a matter of when, not if, Tarleton would make the leap. I'll just say this: if SFA, Lamar and Sam are FBS ready, then so is Tarleton. But Tarleton people (and SLC coaches) already know that.

If Louisiana-Monroe, South Alabama, UNT and UTEP are FBS, why not Tarleton?

Not saying we couldn't, just surprising.

Hey, I thought the WAC could go FBS, just a matter of if they could find the schools to join. Will admit to thinking it would've been further down the line.

I agree with his assessment. Tarleton wanted to join the league for years. Adding Tarleton now would had placed a team with DFW foothold back in the league (something it hasn't had since UTA left). We would have bridged the gap between ACU and the rest of the league and a quick 3 hour drive down 281 to UIW.

They would have added fast growing institution that is committed to success.

They didnt like us in 2005 because of facilities and chose Central Arkansas and Corpus. I thank them for this assessment because it forced us to put new facilities on the admin's radar.
I really thought ACUs addition in 2012 and our subsequent game against the Wildcats in Frisco (outside SLC headquarters) would have upped our profile.

Scheduling games against Sam, SFA, McNeese, and Northwest State put us in front of all of these administrators. They still did not want us.

If you look at the very public nature of our D1 courtship, we announced our intentions, hired a committee to review, got buy in from our stakeholders, published a report stating that D1 was feasible and the SLC should be preferred because of football, geography and similar budgets.

The WAC visited campus and wanted us. We drug our feet on acceptance. The SLC had their chance multiple times but didnt want us.

I would be curious to know but that's water under the bridge. Now I hope we thrash them in every meeting.

Those schools are not FBS ready though. Have you seen their facilities and attendance? Terrible. Lamar has a decent stadium though.

RE: Opinion: SLC misses opportunity with Tarleton - TexanFan - 05-10-2020 06:52 PM

I agree if the Southland had invited us we would have said yes. The reason we are not in the Southland is not on us at all.

Our biggest drawback to moving up is our facilities. We had average to below average facilities for D2 so we are definitely behind for D1.

We need to greatly expand our football field house even with the update it is getting now. We also need to complete phase two and redo what is now the visitors side. We need practice facilities, indoor and outdoor and a bigger weight room.

Our basketball gym is a toilet, a painted toilet but a toilet none the less. Hopefully an upgrade is coming once the new aquatic center is completed. We may horseshoe the west end of the gym to add seats and dressing rooms. We have no practice facilities currently as we practice on the game court. The bleachers in the upper deck need to be replaced with seats.

Our baseball and softball facilities are terrible. Major upgrades are necessary.

We need to add dressing rooms for the tennis courts.

We have a soccer field but no dressing rooms or stands for fans. Also no concessions or bathroom facilities for fans. The women’s program was scheduled to begin playing in 2021 but my understanding is this has been pushed back a year due to the corona.

We could have held out for the SLC, and I think we were for a while after the WAC expressed interest. The one thing i kept hearing why we bolted for the WAC instead was it offered a higher ceiling. The SLC is stagnant, and the WAC is a more dynamic situation.

I think we will methodically address all of the well-known facility issues, but it will take some time. Good news is Hurley gets it. First on the list in my mind is the baseball/softball complex. They need to scrap the whole thing and take a hard look at lesser schools like Weatherford college and step it up. I feel sorry for that new baseball coach trying to recruit D1 talent.
