Pretty nice, positive article.

Very good...

Several unknowns but we should have plenty of talent on the offensive side of the ball...

How well Silverfield and coaching staff can maintain the offensive productivity likely is the biggest question mark. You still have a bunch guys who essentially know it without any additional coaching...So hopefully it won't be an issue.

RE: Still the one but on the rise. - covingtontiger - 05-07-2020 05:40 PM

I have great expectations for Coach Silverfield and his staff. With returning starters at QB, RB, and WR I expect that we can add in some new talent on the offensive side of the ball this year and continue moving the ball up and down the field. If Special Teams remain special under Coach Lembo and DC McIntyre can improve the defense, we could have another great year.

I'd like to see some comments on which new players (or redshirts) we can expect to make an impact this year.

RE: Still the one but on the rise. - k2tigers - 05-07-2020 09:32 PM

But the returning group of White, Gainwell and Coxie will be the best QB-RB-WR trio in the conference and arguably one of the best in the country. The Tigers special teams appears to be in good shape, too, with kicker Riley Patterson back for his senior season after hitting 23 of 25 attempts in 2019.

The ultimate determination of this team's fate may lie with how much the defense improves. Penn State hung 53 points on Memphis in the bowl game, and the Tigers also allowed SMU and Tulsa to surpass 40 points last season. The offense figures to be elite again. If the defense can make strides, this team's ceiling is even higher than it was a season ago with Norvell on the sideline.

I see no reason why our defense won't be improved.

We have an elite DC.

Only concern is this will be the third DC in three years and no spring practice to introduce new schemes. So team will have to learn a new defense in the fall camps. Hopefully if things open up in time the NCAA will allow additional practices this fall to make up for the lost spring practice.

Agreed, I do believe our defense will be better in 2020 than in 2019. Largely because we're only losing Austin Hall, Wilson, and Claybrooks. I do expect Jalil Clemons or Cole Mashburn to be productive. Xavier Cullens will be good, he'll replace Hall. Also, Gabe Rogers or Broussard will get Claybrooks' spot, along with Francis (who will probably be the starter).

Let's not forget, Adam Fuller did an amazing job being the DC at Memphis. Being a DC under Mike Norvell is not the easiest job to have.

We went from giving up 32 points in 2018, to giving up 24 in 2019. That's 13-14 fewer touchdowns in a season.
We also gave 4,840 yards in a game in 2019 (372 average) which is 50 yards fewer per game compared to 2018 season (5,465, 420 average).
In 2018, we gave 250 yards per game in the air. With fuller getting new and faster safeties, that dropped to 200 yards per game.
Only bad thing is that our rushing yards went up by like 2 yards per game I think, and only like 30 yards throughout the season.

Also, Fuller and the defense won us the Ole Miss game, would've shutout South Alabama if it wasn't for a missed tackle, only gave up 5 first downs to South Florida, and only gave up like 2 field goals in quarters 2-4 to Houston.
Fuller did an amazing job, and I expect McIntyre to do the same.

All fair points.

Looking forward to seeing Asa Martin in the backfield too. People who've been to practice say he is the real deal.

Silverfield basically just needs to not screw up the team this year. After that we will begin to see if he can recruit and develop players well enough to keep the train rolling or not.

and avoid the rash of injuries on D that occur too frequently

Early observation so far but he seems to be doing well in recruiting. I don't think he's recruited any 4 stars to date, but he seems to be consistently getting a lot of 3 star players. He has also done a great job of keeping most of the players that were recruited by Norvell from jumping ship when he took the FSU job.

It doesn't seem that long ago that we'd get plenty of 2 stars and a just handful of 3 stars.

McIntyre is a Major upgrade from our Defensive Coach that took off to FL State!!!!

I think the D will improve too.
But we also lost Bryce Huff.

I'd bet the coaches' main goal on D this year is to be good enough to shut down a team like Penn State in a NY6 bowl.

You're right. Losing Bryce arguably is the one that hurts us the most of the four. Totally forgot about him.

This was one of my main concerns. I'm not a football coach, but learning an entirely new defense with limited time has to be a huge disadvantage vs. a team that didn't lose much on defense and has the same returning coach/scheme etc..

Asa was a four star that originally committed to Oklahoma out of high school.
