OT travel advice from App fans - arkstfan - 05-07-2020 10:09 AM

My cruise to Alaska unsurprisingly cancelled last night.

What is current reopening schedule for North Carolina?

Looking for some place that isn’t 98+ degrees with 75% humidity for a few days in mid-July. Thinking maybe Asheville instead of usual trip to Colorado

I live in the Asheville area. The county that Asheville is in just updated their COVID Stay at Home guidelines.

As of this moment you can't book short term rentals without being from the same area code. That includes hotels, campgrounds, and airbnb/private homes. But I suspect it'll be different in July. You should come to AVL if you're not symptomatic.

Watauga/Boone might not have the same restrictions.

I think by Mid July things will be mostly back to normal. Phase 1 supposed to starting Friday at 5. Phase 2 (which will include bars and restaurants opening at reduced capacities etc) supposed to start some time around end of may. Phase 3 is indeterminate after that, it depends on if there is a surge or not.

Obviously Asheville is sweet and has all the amenities and outdoor activities you could ever want, but because of its positioning in a valley, you don't get that much of a break from the heat.

For instance, avg high in July is ~90 in Charlotte, 85 in Asheville, 78 in Boone.

Some of the higher elevation towns around Asheville like Brevard provide a little more relief from the heat, and are still very accessible.

To get away from the heat look for an elevation of 3,500'+. Plenty of those within 20 miles of Boone. My place is already booked or I would have cut you a deal. 04-cheers

I think we're at the point now where travel isn't going to make much of a difference in the case load. Its already everywhere...

I have a weekend job at the Greensboro Science Center (I work in the planetarium) and we have been closed and will be closed until mid-June it seems and even then it will be a partial opening. I am not sure when we open fully or as full as we can open until a vaccine is in full swing but if you were to visit Greensboro I think things would be normal enough that you could do things.

I imagine most other locations in North Carolina will be in a similar situation. My younger twins turn 21 in mid-June and we are renting a house on the coast and that may be pushing it. ABC stores are open around here for the safety of those with alcohol dependency so that is not a worry for them as I am sure they will imbibe a bit that evening. There seem to be a ton of sharks on the coast right now so open or not I may not be getting much wet with salt water.

Then again you did say you wanted non 95+ °F weather with high humidity so Greensboro is out as an option.

I’m counting on making a last minute call. Got to see what happens in June. If we get a surge in June I’ll just keep going to work. Waiting may leave me going to a local lake or someplace on the Sylamore or White River at Mountain View.

If I can sit on a deck or balcony overlooking water for my morning bourbon or evening coffee (or other way around) that may have to be success and then maybe hit the gulf coast in October.

If you stay around Boone, you can enjoy the Alpine Coaster that opens today...

That’s so cool I love alpine coasters. The ones around Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge are a lot of fun.
