BIG NEWS 5.11.20 - Lopes87 - 05-06-2020 10:46 AM

UTRGV just tweeted that big news is coming May 11th. So I bet it's something small but schools love to pump up any kind of news.

Bet they are announcing some kind of "showcase" on campus MTE

RE: BIG NEWS 5.11.20 - Trod0 - 05-06-2020 11:00 AM

What big news could rio grande possibly ever have?

Where are you seeing it? Not seeing it on the MBB account.

Thanks.

Probably nothing very big. "A new beginning." Some other Texas schools are announcing their re-openings after the shutdown, it could be something along those lines.

If you want to have fun speculating about something genuinely big, think positive spin on a massive cost cutting measure. For example, if we accepted an invite to drop down and replace Tarleton in the LSC...that would be a "new beginning".

But nah, most likely just late summer camps.

RE: BIG NEWS 5.11.20 - gleadley - 05-06-2020 11:43 AM

Usually something dumb. The last time a conference school did something like this, it was Chicago State announcing they were going to be a Nike school (even though their athletics teams already wore Nike).

RE: BIG NEWS 5.11.20 - edinburger - 05-06-2020 11:56 AM

Another wild guess: Burt Ogden Arena has taken a huge hit with concert cancellations. Maybe they decided to be more reasonable on terms for UTRGV to play there. 1000 fans in an 8000 seat arena would be a good social distancing move, also.

You may be onto something

1000 fans? Try 400 fans. LOL!

Tarleton's AD believes otherwise. I think he'd know.

Q: Has there been any discussion about the possibility football could return to the WAC as a conference sport in the foreseeable future?

Reisman: The WAC is diligently recreating a football conference that the conference was built on with its rich tradition of football.

Exactly. Drama queens everywhere. It will be something dumb like UTRGV is gonna serve burritos at their concession stands.

1000+. If we have 1289 people attend (that's our home average), it's a safe bet that 1000+ are UTRGV fans.

Of course at NMSU it might only be 40% like you say. The other 60% are just there for the air conditioning or because there's not much else to do in Los Cruces.

UTRGV leaving the WAC for another conference after next season or two.

UTRGV starting up FCS football program?

RE: BIG NEWS 5.11.20 - Fighting Muskie - 05-06-2020 04:53 PM

I hope it’s good news like FCS football. I’m thinking it’s probably something more mundane. I hope it’s not that they are leaving or cutting sports.

Jans is moving to Texas....

It's a nice thought. But the internal messaging to faculty and staff is to start preparing for significant budget cuts in the Fall. No chance Austin would sign off on any new luxury spending paid for by state funds or student fees.

Unless there's a big donor out there willing to make a 5-10 year committment who is insistent that it be for a football program. Which isn't impossible, our local millionaires seem to be very interested in sports.

RE: BIG NEWS 5.11.20 - Itinerant Texan - 05-06-2020 08:27 PM

"BIG NEWS"...."New beginning".....better either be football, or a new conference. Anything less would be uncivilized.

I don't want it to be a new conference. The WAC can't afford to lose another school; especially to a lesser conference like possibly the Southland or Summit. The trajectory of GCU and CBU are going up quickly. And before long the trio of NMSU, GCU, and CBU will have better sports programs than what is found in the Big West, Big Sky, Summit, Southland, SWAC, and possibly the Horizon. These three schools will pull the rest of the WAC up in strength eventually.

RE: BIG NEWS 5.11.20 - Vaqueronation - 05-06-2020 10:23 PM

I'm thinking new sports. Like swimming and diving. They're building a swimming complex right now, but they haven't announce a team or anything yet.
