Kent State's turn to announce big cuts - pvk75 - 04-29-2020 03:50 PM

More bad news ... but not unexpected. Kent State announces 20% cuts, including to athletics...

When things come back in fall of 2021, I do not think its unrealistic to say the MAC won't exist any more.

I think that's highly unrealistic.

Kent State's turn to announce big cuts - Dog Fan - 04-29-2020 04:17 PM

Unless college football changes, I do not see us remaining at the FBS level.

RE: Kent State's turn to announce big cuts - pvk75 - 04-29-2020 04:45 PM

Regardless of how this washes out, we don't know exactly how each of the 12 MAC members will indivdually deal with this. Some of what Akron (see "HB: Big changes at Akron" thread) and Kent State have announced are their actions/reactions based on their situations.

For a university to sort this out means going through the details of its own contracts, revenue streams, personnel, schedules, methods of delivery of services, etc. And that does depend on the other members' actions/reactions, due to conference membership and scheduling. Yes, bad things are going to happen, defining "bad" as things we don't like.

Many of the dire predictions are based on generalisms; some may prove to be true, but we don't know that yet. It's still too early, imo, to sound any kind of death knell.

I could see a scenario where almost every MAC school invests its limited remaining budget in basketball. I could see MAC remaining at Div 1 status in basketball, but I think MAC football and NIU at FBS as we know it is over.

We won't be offering 85 full rides. Football and ball might be like other non revenue sports and start splitting scholarships. Tuition, room and board and books will be given out

Rod Carey forced this on us

FCS Championship here we come!!!

Hey, ya! Just like the Big East, only we could call it the Big MAC.

Oh ... wait ... I think that name's taken. And Northern's specialty is cold hotdogs (in short supply).

That is actually a great analogy. Very much like the Big East, just the mid major form it.

You didn’t hear? Rod Carey is old news for MD. Now Deborah Birx is the one who will kill NIU football.

We are going to look back on these times and wonder, why in the world did we shoot ourselves in the foot. All to cater to some people's wet political dreams, just so sad.

Like the Missouri Valley, the Ohio Valley, and the Horizon League?

I see those conferences as a few pegs below the MAC now.

RE: Kent State's turn to announce big cuts - pvk75 - 04-29-2020 08:49 PM

My Big East-Big MAC comment was a joke, not an analogy. Nor did I intend to inject any politics. But with any comment, a door opens, and there are enough differing personalities on this board to ensure someone is going through.

However, getting back to just NIU (gee, can I please?) this Covid-19 crisis and its potential long-term impacts are ripping the cover off the facade. We're about to delve into the real world of dollars and cents, the real costs of NIU sports to the general university, things like student fees and loan costs, and a hard discussion about whether something is worth it given the returns (ticket sales, attendance, shares of vendor sales, etc.) that imo most fans would like to ignore or downplay.

Or joke about. Why do I suddenly have a taste for a Big Mac?

And compared to NIU, Kent was in a much better financial condition. In midst of multi-year enhancements and construction.
Will be interesting to see how higher ed, and ed at all levels, look like in the future. Sports-less probably.

STFu and Freeman along with every other Illinois political face will simply lie about NIU stability. They will keep lying until the last second.
