Leach can have his political preferences and say who he supports as he so chooses. But being so vocal and partisan about it on social media, at rallies, and elsewhere can be damaging. Pissing off a significant portion of the alumni and Mississippi taxpayers is not good for the football program. Don't lose recruits over Presidential politics, even if the state's majority voters embrace his views. There's been rumblings about it. Competing coaches recruiting against him will exploit it. Mississippi State has enough struggle as it is in landing top recruits.
Ed Orgeron at LSU is a Democrat. But he doesn't make it a distraction.

The South is a lot different than the West Coast, especially culturally. We still say "Yes ma'am, no ma'am; Yes sir, no sir" here. On the West Coast, they say the first thing that come to mind, normally, although there are exceptions to this rule.
