Do you think there will be a 2020 college FB season? - doss2 - 04-06-2020 06:52 AM

Will it be a full season or perhaps abbreviated to conference games only to allow a delayed start? Delay the start to late September?

Yes, there will be...might be one or two weeks late, but that's about it. If this follows the trend of most large form viral organisms and we don't have a vaccine by then, I'd be more worried about the next college basketball season than this upcoming football season.

There should be.

Will there be? Who knows.

It's still too early to know. Sports hasn't safely returned around the world even after 4 month shutdowns in some sports. It's very much in question if there will be an MLB season or resumption of the NBA and NHL seasons. If professional sports cancel seasons then there is no chance amateur sports will be playing. Even if there is a season it won't be college football like we are used to. There will likely be an abbreviated schedule of some sorts and limited attendance. Packing stadiums with 100,000+ people sitting an inch from each other isn't happening in 2020.

Bolded, my take as well. Some have suggested that much of the quarantining is simply deferring the natural progression of the virus, from what I've read recently. Who really knows? Some of what was suggested early on by "experts" has now been debunked or flat out reversed ("Only impacts those over 60; those with compromised immune systems," or, "Healthy people shouldn't wear masks.").

So it's really hard to predict where we'll be come August. Bigger questions in my mind; will games be played without fans present? Will there be a fall semester at UC or anywhere else?

We learn so much about the virus from week to week. Conservative estimates say it will take a while to develop a vaccine, but you can never underestimate the power of American ingenuity when problems arise. I'm hopeful we figure it out by the fall. But it doesn't look great so far.

Too soon to tell in my opinion, but Bob Huggins says "Let’s face it there’s a great chance we’re not going to have college football. Putting that many people together is going to be rough. I wouldn’t want to have to make that decision. "

But I think what he says after that is even more interesting, albeit off-topic: "So, why don’t we start the (basketball) season off with the NCAA Tournament? [The NCAA] can get its money and distribute it to the schools. It solves a lot of problems”

He goes on to suggest conferences go ahead and play their tournaments first if they want to and that seniors be allowed to return to play it as well. I think it's probably far-fetched logistically in a lot of ways (presumably grad transfers would play with their "new" schools potentially against their "old" schools.) but this year is going to have an asterisk by it anyway for eternity so big deal if the results are rather suspect. I think it would actually be pretty fun and generate a lot of interest if there was a way to actually do it.

I love huggs' idea. I have no idea what the covid-19 situation will be on the ground but if it's feasible to do it I think it would be awesome.

If football season occurs, it won't be as normal.

I wouldn't be surprised if they allowed August practices. But I am not sure what would happen after that. I doubt that they would shorten the season by 2 or 4 weeks. It just wouldn't accomplish much in mitigation.

If they allow fans in the stands, I would expect games everywhere to be poorly attended relative to past seasons. Might be interesting to see the most innovative face mask designs. (Free face mask giveaway, anyone?)

Games played in empty stadiums would certainly be strange. I would still be happy to watch - I am going a little stir crazy.

I give it perhaps a 50-50 chance of even having a FB season, but it is still early. Tough to be an optimist right now.

In theory it would be fun. The rub would be do you allow a one time expansion of rosters to include the new frosh, will the grad come back and who do the transfers play for? Would be fairly easy to workaround if the venues are also available which one would think they would be. High stakes for a practice season. LOL

Also, i'm guessing we'd have our automatic bid for the conference tie breaker. The kids with Nba teams would likely not be playing. I can't believe any of them will allow it for injury fears. My guess is the Nba draft goes on as planned.

Not that it would solve any logistical issues, but I really like the idea of seeding last year's bracket, and just playing it with the new teams as sort of a "preseason NIT" type of deal. Most teams will only get 1 or 2 extra games out of it, it still allows the players who are returning to get some sort of reward for last season, and it gives us a chance to kick the year off with a fun slate of games.

Two things. The head health guy in San Francisco said he doesn't expect any sporting events to be held in the city until at least post-Thanksgiving.

Second, a national poll came out today that said that 72% would NOT attend a sporting event until there was a vaccine.

Not looking good to be honest. And that just sucks. But if we can get through May with things looking good, who knows? Time will give people a better persepctive.

I'm really beginning to wonder if there will be. But it's only April. However, time goes by quickly.

I guess UC will just treat our money as paying for 2021 FB season.

Will the players eligibility be extended?

Will scholarship levels be increased to allow for the holdovers?

Quickly?? Cancelling the conference tournament feels like it was 2-1/2 years ago. Lol.

No way we have a 'normal' CFB season. Abbreviated, most likely. No or reduced spectators quite possibly. But I think TV revenue will dictate that CFB will be played.

Since no one including experts seem to be able to get a steady read on the virus, no clue myself. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s cancelled or if the stadiums are packed to the T.

I’ll check back here in June.

Starting the season in October would allow 9 games or 8 with a bye week.

The balance of the year would proceed with Conference Payoffs, etc.

5 days ago, Dr Acton said the peak would be 1600 cases per day in Ohio. So far, the daily peak was 427 cases and that was over a week ago. New cases have been on a slight decline the past 9 days-- yet they are telling us that new cases will quadruple by the end of April. wth? There is nothing in the data that suggests cases will quadruple, but hey-- models.

All I know is the so called experts really don't have much expertise. So will we have a season? I think we will have a start to the season. My fear is that if there is a seasonal outbreak in say November-- that they could panic and do the forced shutdown thing all over again.
