Louisiana: fastest spreading state for Coronavirus - Marc Mensa - 03-23-2020 03:21 PM

In my opinion, this is the most frightening news I’ve heard to date. As crazy as it sounds, we’ve been lucky thus far. The afflicted in NY, Washington and California have been younger and less likely to smoke, have asthma, be diabetic or overweight. As a result, the mortality rate has been very low. If this virus explodes in the American south, however, we’ll see results much more like Italy than the American West or East Coasts. Very scary...

RE: Louisiana: fastest spreading state for Coronavirus - rath v2.0 - 03-23-2020 03:27 PM

Michigan, specifically around Detroit, is taking off exponentially. Georgia seems to be doing the same thing.

New York is turning into Italy right now.

You lost me there. Younger people, especially in Washington and Cali, are VERY likely to smoke weed and vape. We know vaping is bad for your lungs. Hell, before all of this, governments were in the process of doing away with vaping. My guess, vaping is causing a lot of these problems.

Perhaps you’re right. I equate smoking with older Americans, not thinking of young folks and vaping. What we do know, however, is older folks who smoke have much higher mortality rates from Coronavirus than those 65+ who don’t... and while vaping might be why so many younger Americans have contracted the virus, thus far it has not had the devastating mortality as it has in Italy. If it hits the American south in a similar manner as it has in NY, then I believe the rate will be much higher.

Go south....even SW to Phoenix/Tempe..it’s nuts...about every 20 something has a smoke in their mouth.

Gonna be 90 degrees in a day or so here. Doubt a big surge happens during that time. Louisiana has always been referred to around here as a third world country and anyone who has stepped foot in the French Quarter will know it is not the most sanitary place in the world. This is gonna be a big city thing. People are too dependent on mass transit there.

IDK, West Virginia falls into a state that is older, has a ton of smokers, high numbers of overweight and diabetic citizens and they have the lowest rate of the virus in the country. Of course, they have a small population and the access to health care is poor so people aren't getting tested there.

New Orleans is a port city... lots of cruise and seagoing travelers...and also just had 2 million out of town tourists descend on New Orleans for Mardi Gras.

Italy is somewhere around a whopping 9%. Older population, large social gatherings, men especially with the smoke.

U.S. currently right in line with S. Korea, just north of 1%. And that's of confirmed cases, run that against Pop and it's a rounding error.

Not good, want it to go away, but then we likely need to tackle cars.

I'm not sure exactly how, but I'm pretty sure that's RACIST.
Even if you have data to back it up, you cannot single out people like that.
It's XENOPHOBIC. You're going to hurt southerner's FEELINGS.

I'm trying to adjust to the insane identity politics. Trying to learn the trigger words.
Carry on.

By the way, do we know those afflicted in Louisiana are older, fatter, smokers, etc or are you making sweeping generalizations about a group of people based on stereotypes? Hey, maybe it is racist, or at least biased.

Over 40% a day for last two days is concerning. I am guessing it is N.O. where most is happening.

RE: Louisiana: fastest spreading state for Coronavirus - Fort Bend Owl - 03-23-2020 05:20 PM

One of the new cases in Galveston County is a 10-year-old girl who had traveled to New Orleans recently. I'm sure there are some people who were there for Mardi Gras who have traveled back home and are potential community spread carriers.

It is what it is. Just monitor the numbers and either continue the lockdowns in place, add more measures to prevent the spread, or (hopefully) if the numbers don't get worse, we can start to lift some of the restrictions in another week or two.

The most troubling issue for Orleans Parish is the death toll there (20 deaths. and 5 more in Jefferson Parish)

Yep..and notoriously poor local leadership. Seems they learned zippo from Katrina.

They should have taken Trump’s advice and canceled Mardi Gras.

A few of the TN cases are people who went to NoLa for Mardi Gras.

which is why we should've isolated those in the danger zone only, and let the rest run its course through the masses....

as I pined about for mos., the Dutch finally had the balls to figure out and implement that equation...

DJT is getting ready to do the same....watch it happen by the end of the first week in April....

#~1mos. before the uproar from johhny Q. became overwhelming....

I think there’s a balance there/here.

I don’t know about necessarily reopening everything like large gatherings at ball parks, concerts and etc cause that may make another surge and chaos. But as you say, work? Shouldn’t be a real problem if you aren’t a complete tard about it.

If I can go to the Costco, over to the Kroger then hit up the local wings shop (best I’ve ever had, rival mine which pisses me off, but I’d still win) why can’t folks go to work at the hair salon?

Is kohl’s or target somehow different than Publix? How about outside outfitter? Get people out and moving? The local machine shop can’t open if they want?

I’d say in a hard hit schithole like what’s now NYC or LA, Fransicko or Seattle, sure. Lock em down. Spray the streets for once. Clear out the bums, junkies, shanty’s and whatever else. Perfect opportunity to avoid the next plague.

The rest of us? Let us do our thing with guidance from CDC and NIH.

We ain dumb.
