Florida Senate Declares FSU Champs - CarlSmithCenter - 03-14-2020 07:29 AM

One would think the Florida legislature would have bigger fish to fry at the moment...

We can hold a poll on here and have it be as official as the one they had in that senate.

Must be something in the water down there in Florida that makes them all keep claiming championships.

Who knows, maybe next week the Orlando Magic will claim the NBA championship and put a banner up in their arena. 07-coffee3

I'm sorry. Didn't Auburn beat UG and UA that year?

Apples and oranges.

The difference is that in college football, multiple teams have been declaring themselves national champs going back to the 1920s. The same year that UCF claimed a title, Oklahoma State claimed a national championship for their undefeated 1945 team, and put up a sign in their stadium.

Alabama, in addition to having several widely-recognized titles, claims a few more that not many people recognize.

Nothing wrong with it.

Basketball, on the other hand, has never done it that way.

Misunderstood. It sucks that college playoffs in all sports are not the same, but understandable, since CFB is the money maker.

OK, but only if one of the options is to declare all conference champions to be national co-champions. So therefore I would certainly like to congratulate Florida State and Dayton on joining Siena and 29 other schools as the 2020 national co-champions.

I agree with the first part. But the bolded part is incorrect. I posted this already in another thread, but I'll repeat it here:

For example, Butler claims the 1924 and 1929 national titles.

The 1924 national title claim is based on winning the AAU tournament. But they went 9-7.

Butler's 1929 title claim is based on an award from the Veteran Athletes' Association of Philadelphia.

North Carolina contests Butler's 1924 title claim. UNC went 26-0 that year and was awarded the title retroactively by the Helms Athletic Foundation. UNC did not win any tournaments that year other than the Southern Conference tourney:

Montana State contests Butler's 1929 title claim based on their 36-2 record and a retroactive award from the Helms Athletic Foundation. You can just barely see it in this picture on the left:

RE: Florida Senate Declares FSU Champs - 3BNole - 03-17-2020 09:41 AM

As an FSU fan I can tell you that over the weekend when the news broke, 99% of FSU fans on the message boards thought it was ridiculous and shouldn’t have been done. The university for what it’s worth hasn’t even acknowledged it (at least not yet). Now on a personal level, given the highly unusual circumstances surrounding the whole postseason, I have no problem with it. Also, I have no problem with any other school in the top 10-16 or even any which won their conference tournaments making similar claims. The fact of the matter is that all the players (of each team that would have competed in the tournament) got screwed out of what was maybe a once in a lifetime opportunity by fate and any sort of token acknowledgement that can be given to recognize their respective seasons I am in favor of.

On a side note, as an FSU fan, the cancelling of the tournament was probably the hardest sports event I’ve ever gone through. We had the best team we’ve had in a generation and legitimately had a chance to compete for the title... and to watch all that just evaporate. The fact is, we aren’t Duke or Carolina or Virginia, we aren’t Villanova or Kansas. This was a maybe once in a lifetime opportunity. Man, it hurt. We may have lost in the second round, we may have won it all. Now every FSU fan will have to love forever wondering how good they really were.

Next time wait until someone specifically mentions UCF before you get defensive. Just assuming they were talking about your team (even if they were) is a bad look.

Really? I thought the reference to "the water in Florida" and the Orlando Magic was about UCF as well. Seems pretty obvious it was so "sierra" made a fair inference.

Also, Wedge was right to make that joke, as UCF's claim in nonexistent. Clemson, LSU, and Georgia also all beat Auburn that year, so beating a 3-loss team in a non-playoff Peach Bowl is absolutely zero basis for claiming anything.

Montana State! The one time I was there was the coldest vacation ever. Went skiing at Big Sky and it was 10 below at the base of the lift.

Could the team that was #1 in the poll make a claim for Basketball championship this year?

I heard him only mention teams in Florida. Am I wrong about that?
