Covid-19's impact on AAC/NCAA tourneys / NEWS: Two medications show promising results - jedclampett - 03-10-2020 03:25 AM

.
Several posters have raised concerns and questions about how the current coronavirus panidemic may affect the AAC and NCAA tournaments that are scheduled to begin in the next two weeks.

============================================

Based on the fact that many universities have cancelled classes, while a number of other large events and concerts have been cancelled or postponed, it appears possible, if not likely that either or both tournaments might end up being postponed (or possibly televised from empty arenas).

The heightened precautions are attributable, in part to Monday's reports of mortality rates as high as 4.96% in some nations:

"Italy's health ministry today reported 1,492 new cases today, along with 133 more deaths, bringing its respective overall totals to 7,375 cases and 366 deaths."

Fortunately, there appear to have been a couple of potentially very promising developments, some announced in the past 24 hours.

============================================

Promising reports about possible life-saving treatment for the coronavirus (Covid-19).

============================================

A search of the recent information on covid-19 today revealed some potentially very promising reports about the efficacy of two drug treatments for covid-19, one of which has met the FDA approval criteria for safety and public distribution for another contagious disease (malaria) - -but hasn't yet been formally approved for treatment of covid-19 per se. Whether or not it could or would be approved for "off-label" use (to treat conditions other than those for which approval was granted) is not known, and would have to be determined on a nation-by-nation basis, and/or possibly on an international basis, for example, by the World Health Organization.

Please note that there haven't been any formal approvals for use of these drugs to treat a large number of persons with covid-19, and that these drugs couldn't in any way be used as vaccines, or to limit the spread of the covid-19 disease. But they might help to limit the mortality rates that may be attributable to covid-19, in the future.

============================================

There have been a series of very recent announcements about two different drugs that have shown signs of being effective curative treatments for COVID-19 that are currently being evaluated.

One (remdesivir) is relatively new, but has previously gone through its phase I and II clinical trials, and has been found to be safe - - it was developed to treat other coronaviruses.

In addition, there are reports of cooperative clinical trials with remdesivir being conducted in China.

Remdesivir has been administered to a handful of patients on a compassionate emergency care basis, with approvals, and the patients did recover.

The clinical trial is scheduled to be completed within the next two months, and the trial goes well enough, preliminary findings might be available by May 1st.

The other drug (Chloroquine Phosphate) is an FDA-approved antimalarial drug that is widely available & can be prescribed and distributed around the world, although not yet formally approved to treat covid-19 in particular, has been available dating back at least to 1964 and has recently shown promising results with covid-19.

Chloroquine can be administered more quickly and easily than remdesivir, which is being administered intravenously for 12 straight days in the approved Phase III clinical trials.

Antimalarial drug confirmed effective on COVID-19: official

"BEIJING, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese experts, based on the result of clinical trials, have confirmed that Chloroquine Phosphate, an antimalarial drug, has a certain curative effect on the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), a Chinese official said here Monday."

Coronavirus COVID-19 (SARS-2-CoV)"

This article states that the virus that causes the disease known as covid-19 is referred to as "SARS-2-CoV." This pandemic is entirely different and distinct from the earlier SARS epidemic, but it may be of interest to note that covid-19 is thought to be caused by a distantly related member of the coronavirus family.
