OT: for the ODUers and Norfolk locals - MUther - 03-09-2020 06:53 PM

Something you don't get to see every day. Woody Williams is a local(WV) CMH winner and they're commissioning a new carrier in his honor in Norfolk.

Great post. The Norfolk (pronounced NAW-fik) Naval Base is literally right down the road from ODU.

That's how I hear it most often, even when I've been there.

I'm on team naw-fik, and usually I get pegged for being a local when I say it.

Just not nor-FORK. I had a friend, who came from the Midwest, and she would always say nor FORK and it would make me want to jump out of my skin, vertically.

I think the Norfolk in Nebraska might be pronounced that way, or at least close.

Its "Nor-fuk", or else the old Norfolk cheer doesnt work. "We don't drink! We don't smoke! Norfolk! Norfolk!" Just don't call it Nor-foke.

That's why we keep a fork in our pockets, so we can gently stab someone who pronounces it that way. It's socially acceptable here, don't worry.

That ship is an absolute unit. It dwarfed Nauticus and the USS Wisconsin.

The USS Woody Williams a 'floating sea base" not than a carrier, but handles missions of support no other navy ships can handle. The USS Chesty Puller taught the Navy that this class needs full-time Navy crews because of their unique capabilities.

Exactly, you can always tell someone is unfamiliar with the 757 when they pronounce it nor-“folk.” The pronunciation is exactly the same as the f-bomb. Identical. Nor-**** is the proper pronunciation.

clt says this ship is almost as impressive as the odu tennis facility

RE: OT: for the ODUers and Norfolk locals - MAN4UAB - 03-15-2020 07:14 AM

This thread explains why a friend of mine from that area kept getting on to me for using “No - Foke”.

RE: OT: for the ODUers and Norfolk locals - ODU BBALL - 03-15-2020 09:53 AM

Being a native Virginian that has lived my entire 60+ years in the Portsmouth/Suffolk region of Hampton Roads I can say that pretty much no one that is from this area pronounces Norfolk like it is spelled. I am most accustomed to hearing most long time local people like myself pronounce it Norf*ck with some others in a lesser amount that pronounce it Norfik.

Did anyone go to the ceremony? I mean the pronunciation of your city is ungodly important, I understand, but I was curious about the actual topic.

No, but he seems to be a great man! General MacArthur is another worthy man who is buried in Norfolk (pronounced nor-fuc). The other local joke is that if there is a nuclear war, Norfolk/Hampton Roads will be one of the first flashes. We are the headquarters to the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. And we wear that badge with honor!

I was going to go but I heard how the reporters pronounced Norfolk and sat out in protest.
