Golden times for WBB - bigowlsfan - 03-08-2020 06:46 PM

we are now on a 2 year, 34-2 conference record run. That is an amazing record.

I wish we had won a winnable game against Marquette last year in the tournament. I hope we can return this year.

Either way, what a tremendous run that program has had.

True and the attempt to downplay the importance of their success is disappointing.

Not the fans who are downplaying it. I think most Rice fans are very, very happy to see WBB have success.

Nonetheless, DIS executives value CFB and MBB at a 40x multiple vs. WBB so...

I don't think anyone is downplaying their success. Across the board, this is probably the greatest success that women's sports have ever enjoyed at Rice. And that is something to be featured, not downplayed. But women's sports aren't going to get us out of CUSA, at least not upwardly.

True, but at least they are not a drag, trending toward laughing stock, as baseball is.

I believe football will be solid to good next year, but let the season prove me out to be right or wrong.

Almost every comment about the success of WBB is followed by BUT... we all know that the big 3 are FB, MBB, and BB so why can’t we simply praise WBB for their success in the area in which they play?

I’m probably one of the biggest complainers on this board-and I haven’t seen much/any complaining in WBB game threads.. So I’m not sure what exactly you’re referring to. It’s not like people are posting “55-47 Rice 2:31 left in the 4th. And oh, Bragga is a terrible coach.”

However-If you ask people to comment on the overall state of the athletic department. Football, men’s hoops, and baseball matter far more to me (and the vast majority of the overall sports viewing population). Rice could win a national championship in WBB tomorrow and I’d still think a shakeup needs to occur at the top of our athletic department.

I don't think that is downplaying their success. It's more just an expression of reality.

Based upon results, I think it's fair to state that Joe Karlgaard is the best AD we have ever had for women's sports, but perhaps the worst for men's. And unless we get FB, MBB, and BB fixed, we are going to run out of the money we need to sustain women's sports.

There's a reason why the P5 tend to dominate women's sports even more than men's. I know about UConn, but that's a special case, and you see a lot of 90-30 scores when P5 women play non-P5, and you just don't see that on the men's side. It's called money. The P5 have way, way more of it to spend on women's sports than do the non-P5. That makes the run of success Rice has had in women's sports even more remarkable. But it also makes it unsustainable if we don't get the money-makers back to making money. Or at least not losing it at such a rapid pace.

Erica (3rd time) and Nancy (2nd time) make both all-conference first team and all-conference defensive team. Schwartz make all-Freshman team.

Mid-major top 10
Quote:9. Rice (21-8, 16-2 Conference USA)

The peaks and valleys of Rice's season have been more pronounced than most teams on this list, but the Owls closed the regular season with five straight wins -- including the finale against fellow NCAA hopeful Old Dominion -- to win the regular-season title outright. That was also the best offensive streak of the season for a team that generally relies on defense. The NCAA tournament needs Erica Ogwumike, the 5-foot-9 guard with 15 double-digit rebound games. Last month's ranking: 8

Ok I’m now officially on the at-large bandwagon for any of CUSA’s top three as long as they reach the final four in Frisco.

Just noticing now that the ODU sophomore who scored 29 against us didn't make any of the 3 all-conference teams, but 3 of her teammates did (one 1st team, 2 2nd team). She led them in scoring overall and was 2nd in scoring for them in conference games, but somehow got overlooked over the others? Weird.

No surprise-- Erica named CUSA Player of the Year for second consecutive year! 04-cheers

Well, if you want to keep that thought and topic in the forefront, this would be the way to do it.
