Future CUSA Hoops Tournaments - THE NC Herd Fan - 03-06-2020 06:40 PM

Charlotte is a city without a tournament for at least for 2021 and 2022 as not only the CIAA tournament moves on but so the ACC. Why not move the tournament to Charlotte for the next two years and show the eastern schools some love?

It's always about the money. If the city of Charlotte opens up their wallet, I'm sure C-USA would locate the tourney there.

Big south tournament is here in the future isn’t it?

Charlotte estimates the financial impact of the CIAA tournament at $55 million. Charlotte gives the CIAA $1.5 million for scholarships. What do you think the impact is for the C-USA tournament?

RE: Future CUSA Hoops Tournaments - MUsince96 - 03-06-2020 08:36 PM

It's in Frisco through 2021.

No clue. C-USA can't get squat from any real media outlet for our football content. And, our basketball tournament is mostly on streaming platforms. So, I doubt our basketball tournament has much value.

RE: Future CUSA Hoops Tournaments - ODUDJ96 - 03-06-2020 11:47 PM

The tournament needs to be played on campus to draw the best crowds. The Frisco experiment is a joke and needs to end. Very few from VA will ever attend a game in TX.

ODU had a decent crowd last year in the Tech vs ODU quarterfinal game, I was there. The Frisco tournament is far from a joke. It’s well ran and if you get the chance you should attend.

Its a joke to those that will only drive 5 minutes away from their home for a tourney. Other than a tourney played at ODU, this ODU fan will find a number of things to complain about. The one thing I'm 100% sure of...he wont be at any game.

ODU did have more fans in Frisco than they had in B'ham. As far as the experience goes...the last 2 CUSA tourney's night and day better than B'ham.

RE: Future CUSA Hoops Tournaments - TOPSTRAIGHT - 03-07-2020 03:20 AM

How about this simple statement. A team from VA should not be in a conference with a team from TX.

RE: Future CUSA Hoops Tournaments - ghostofclt! - 03-07-2020 06:55 AM

clt says Charlotte can easily host this tourney. Women’s tourney can play at haltron on our beautiful campus with pristine creeks and blooming dogwoods.

men’s tourney can take place uptown at the hornets arena. Both are connected via light rail.

wku can pay for rooms for the refs at our ritz Carlton, and marshal fans can camp in the speedway parking lot for a nominal fee

By all accounts it's a well run event. But to us cheap asses who aren't willing to spend $1,000+/person to fly to Frisco it does look like a joke on TV. Charlotte would be great.

Not only that, but in a conference with FOUR teams from Texas. You are right.

Big South is at Bojangles arena, Spectrum Center would be available.

RE: Future CUSA Hoops Tournaments - D1Docket - 03-07-2020 01:00 PM

It's pathetic that we're in season 7 and the Conference Tournament has not come further east than Birmingham. If it's going to be in Texas, located close to a hub airport is the best place, especially if El Paso is on the table. The old Charlotte admin didn't want to pony up, but maybe that will change with Mike Hill. A 3-year rotation between Dallas (Frisco), Charlotte and Miami makes the most sense for travel ease.

The tournament also needs to contract to 8 or 10 teams. On years where we have bubble teams we're just playing with fire having 11 and 12 seeds in the mix. Perhaps even throw in byes to the semi finals for first and maybe the second seed.

My Ideal Format:
  • Top 10 Teams Eligible
  • First Round: 3 Games at highest seed (10 at 5, 9 at 6, 8 at 7)
  • Re-seed before Quarter Finals, 3 games at Neutral Site (5 v 4, 6 v 3, 7 v 2)
  • 1 seed given bye to Semi finals (1 v 4/5, 2/7 v 3/6)

Unless UNCC was playing it would look like a joke on TV. Well on second thought, it still might even if UNCC was playing. Their 2,000 fans sitting in a arena that holds 19,000 would look worse than a joke. How many ODU fans are going to make a 5 hour drive, take off work 3 to 4 days, add in the cost of a hotel. Without loss work income you are still around $500 and a 10 hour round trip drive. Some how I cant see the ODU fans more than doubling what was in Frisco about 200.

So now you have 2,000 UNCC FANS and 400 ODU fans, add in the 400 to 500 Western fans that travel no matter where its played and the 250-300 Marshall fans....

3500 or so sitting in a arena that holds 19k...is still a joke. UAB might add 200 more fans.

Typing all of that I think I found out where the problem is at. Not where its played but the fans of the teams in this conference. Till that is fixed, you can play this tourney anywhere in American. I have no problems playing the tourney at UNCC...

it would still look like a joke on TV

I know what the drive is but 20, 15, 10, 8 are all the same to most fans. Get down to 4 or 5 and the number of fans might double vs the 20 hour drive or those flying. ODU had more fans in Dallas than in Birmingham a 10 hour drive. Most likely cheaper flights

Unless the host team is playing we are only talking 1 to 1000 more fans, not 2 to 6 thousand. That's total numbers over all 12 schools playing in the tourney

I'm at a place in life it doesn't matter where it is outside a distance I don't need a hotel. 2 kids 3rd on the way plus coaching 2 baseball teams. It's tv for me for next decade at minimum if its overnight. So yall hash this out till my kids move out. :)

400 ODU fans Wed & Thurs? Probably a little low. If we're playing Fri or Sat several thousand. Charlotte, ODU, MT, WKU, Marshall & UAB are all within a 7 hour drive of Charlotte. There's a pretty good chance any given year that a couple of them would be playing on the weekend and send some decent numbers.

At least there wouldn't be a curtain and the shot clock wouldn't be setting on a card table and some chintzy looking bleachers made to hold a couple hundred and still half filled. It would still look better in an empty basketball arena than an empty football practice facility. But if y'all like Frisco that's fine. Good year for it to be there. NT fans better show out. But it should not be there every damn year.
