https://sunbeltsports.org/news/2020/3/3/general-pensacola-selected-to-host-2021-25-basketball-championships.aspx

Quote:PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Sun Belt Conference announced today that the city of Pensacola, Fla., has been selected to host the 2021-25 Sun Belt Men's and Women's Basketball Championships as a part of the league's partnership with Pensacola Sports, in collaboration with the Pensacola Bay Center, Pensacola State College and Visit Pensacola.

Over the five-year agreement, the conference is set to return to 12-team formats for both men's and women's tournaments. The 2021 Sun Belt Men's and Women's Basketball Championships are scheduled for March 5-8 with first-round and second-round games played simultaneously at the Pensacola Bay Center and Hartsell Arena on the campus of Pensacola State College and semifinal and championship games played at the Bay Center. Both championship games are slated for live coverage with the women's final on ESPNU and the men's final on ESPN or ESPN2.

I like that we're going back to the 12 team tourney. A five year stint in Florida hopefully will bring in a good amount of fans and interest from locals.

Boo.

Hold the tournament on the campuses and either do what baseball does and rotate the host or hold the tournament on the campus of the regular-season champ.

And 12 teams is utterly ridiculous. We're not getting an at-large bid any time soon so why create more chances for your best team to stumble so we end up facing a #1 or #2 seed in the NCAAs.

Because we'll face a #1 or #2 seed anyway, lol.

Unless we have another 2015-2016 Little Rock that goes 30-5... who most likely won't stumble in the first round of the SBC tournament anyway.

In 2017, UTA was knocking on the door of getting an at-large.

So fairly easy drive for the half the conference. Nice!

So you think 2016-17 UTA or 2017-18 UL would face a #1 or #2? I disagree with you, there.

Waste of money. One bid league. Let the best team to go the tournament. League tournaments kind of make sense for bigger leagues and of course we have to copy them. Waste of money.

No, and for the record I don't agree with letting all of the teams go to the tournament.

I just don't see any reason why a #1 seed the caliber of '16 Little Rock or '17 UTA should lose to the worst team in the conference. And besides, my guess is the SBC isn't going to let that happen anyway... they'll probably give some sort of BYE to both the #1 and #2 seeds so they don't play an RPI dragger right out of the gate.

My preference would be just that. Win regular season, congratulations, season is over folks but our TV partner wants a made-for-TV event. ACC at least took the stance that they didn't crown a regular season champ when they started this tournament thing.

But that's not happening so I'd rather do this than have hosting come down to coin flip (AState vs UNO)

Glad we're moving to another site. A little further from Little Rock, than New Orleans, but no big deal now that I'm retired. Looks like we are moving the tournament back a week since we won't be having a week of on-campus play-in games. I definitely like the 2 site format- I'm sure they'll make sure a specific schools men's and women's team won't be playing at the same time. I am interested what the format will be like. I guess they could keep the format for the men, the same, but all games would be at a neutral site. But, actually, that seems impossible in the 4 day time frame they have set-up so it apparently will be changed.

Yeah but I hate the drives equally so it pans out. You give up the speed trap in Lake Providence for the traffic suck that is Birmingham.

This is dumb and the people who made this decision should feel dumb.

Great choice, great bar/restaurant scene within 5-10 minutes of the coliseum, and great beaches within easy drive, fun city to watch a weekend of basketball.

I think having all the teams in the tournament lets fans make plans to go easier instead of waiting for the last second to see if their team makes it.

Actually baseball is doing the same exact thing. 5-year contract at “neutral” site (Montgomery) with all teams participating.

*I put neutral in quotes since Troy has a campus there.

Interesting. I thought only 8 teams were going with 2 four team pods.

We are though the league hasn’t announced it yet
A 12 team baseball tournament is doable round robin but very hard

Not sure if it’s in play, but there are two fields downtown Montgomery that could be used for the baseball tourney.
