Good Grief - This Idiocy at WMU Too? - MileHighBronco - 02-26-2020 04:09 PM

I ran across this as I was doing some reading this morning. I can only shake my head and groan at the stupidity of this whole idea of 'cultural appropriation.' This example is similar to stories I've read that occurred at other schools and it doesn't really surprise me at all that it has now become an issue at our school.

“A Mockery Of My Culture”: Students Oppose A “Mostly White” Choir For Singing Spirituals as Cultural Appropriation

The short-sightedness of this kind of thinking has me reflecting on all the great parts of our American culture that would not be had previous generations been afflicted with this type of thinking and belief system.

Just my take, but I think that the one sounding uneducated and ignorant is the person complaining about it.

Yeah, let's Balkanize MUSIC now and demand that musicians can only perform songs from their particular group/community, etc.

Stupid is as stupid does......

You're right. It is idiocy.

I thought America was supposed to be the melting pot. The great experiment. A celebration of many different cultures and ideas.

The "woke" crowd sounds just like the racists of old...we gotta stick to our OWN KIND, right??

If ya think it's bad now, it's only gonna get worse.

But if they do only sing music associated with "white" culture, it's a racist exclusion of the culture of people of color.

It's much easier when you realize it's all a political game and fake outrage. It's not stupid; it's political games marketed to the weak minded.

It's just old-school Marxism with a new layer of race or something else to replace the economic basis, which obviously failed. Thank our Italian friend Antonio Gramsci for inspiring this. The Kulaks are always to blame no matter what... even to the point of defeating the USSR and the coming utopia by controlling the masses through "cultural hegemony." This hegemony must be broken at every level, not just liquidating the czar... only then can we reach the end of history and achieve paradise.

https://socialism.com/fs-article/the-problematic-legacy-of-a-marxist-thinker-invoking-gramsci-to-retreat-from-revolution/

As long as the choir is perceived to be made up by the Kulaks, even if their parents all voted for Hillary, the choir must be broken.

I agree RunningGame.

IOW, it's cultural marxism. Good point.

What sucks is that it was a visiting professor - not even a WMU employee - and the university seems wrapped up in it. Honestly, it was one student who had a problem, and turned it into a Twitter/Instagram post that took off from there.

Reminds me of this scene from Forrest Gump:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hc8XAb73i4U

Can't have a white dude in a black choir?!

Can't have an Asian cooking Mexican food?!

Taylor Swift can't sing Aretha's "Respect?" Not that she'd do it well, but why not?

Under this logic, the Blues Brothers were racist cultural appropriators!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdbrIrFxas0

This is ALL BS! It is not about what makes us different, it is about what brings us together.

There is a thing called White Privilege.

Under this condition whites, especially white males, feel their opinion is the only opinion that is correct and appropriate. They become defensive and angry. They cannot believe the POC does not understand their view. They feel their assessment is more likely to be correct.

Under this cultural misogyny’s influence they are unable to even hear the expression of fact. The POC has simply stated the actual effect the appropriation has on them. They are the expert. They are telling you how they feel. In the presence of that input, White Privilege cannot absorb the idea that would even matter. Especially if the POC is female.

Then more mansplaining, lecturing, ridicule. Etc.

Take a deep breathe. This young women shared her viewpoint with you. Try just accepting that as true for her and a valid expression she was willing to share. She has no obligation to update your social development, this was simply her gift to you. Be grateful. Try to relax and enjoy life.

Been thinking the same thing. If you are not personally affected it is hard to see the harm. Think black face for example.

Think the Wayans' "White Chicks".

Yeah, what's the harm?

Except for verbal/physical assault and harassment of course.

RE: Good Grief - This Idiocy at WMU Too? - Aimless1 - 02-27-2020 09:17 PM

Jordan Peterson, extreme right wing apologist. He may as well be a white nationalist. Try a credible source.

I am ok with being wrong, but neither a right nor a left wing extremist is credible.

Here we see a good example of white privilege explaining why white privilege isn’t white privilege. High quality mansplaining got to give an A for effort though these guys do know their craft for sure.

And has little to do with the sister and her pushback around cultural appropriation. Makes a big smile.

Right.

A social scientist gives an academic explanation.

And on que.

From you we get dismissive comments on his race.

With a term like "mansplaining" thrown in for good measure.

Quote: Makes a big smile.

With smugness to boot.

You couldn't have done more to illustrate his point.

Distraction. The sister makes a comment around her study of black culture and all the white men get all bent out of shape. I’m saying, what is the harm. Try to listen a bit if you are actually interested. It doesn’t have to be all hostile. It’s just a simple conversation about micro aggression. No biggie where white men have to butt in where they are not qualified or wanted.

Nonsense like this is why I stopped donating to WMU. I wrote them several times first complaining about their slide towards PC, but they either didn't get my message or ignored it.

I guess they don't need donations from conservative alumni? There are other more appreciative groups I donate to these days, that are sensible enough to recognize that people of ALL political persuasions donate funds. Western doesn't have to embrace my political views and I don't expect them to, but they don't need to-continually-stick their thumb in our eyes. Not smart, to say the least.
