Transfer Rules to Change - Pony94 - 02-18-2020 03:50 PM

I would think Houston and SMU would be for this. Get the guys that went P5, sat and want to come home.

Division I student-athletes in all sports could have the opportunity to compete immediately after transferring one time if a proposed change to waiver guidelines is adopted by the Division I Council this spring.

I'd think most of us would benefit.

True - major cities that have homegrown talent that want to come home and play in front of their families.

I mean, I went elsewhere and transferred to Temple. Happens plenty for athletes and non-athletes. Morgantown, Gainesville, State College, etc. ain't for everyone.

I favor the rule change, but I think it harms Memphis. In football lately, the Tigers have unearthed and polished gems overlooked by certain P-5 schools. Now they will be able to transfer easily.

If you are playing well, on a winning team and getting noticed, do you risk moving to a new school?

Anyways, the net positive to us will be greatly in our favor.

RE: Transfer Rules to Change - pesik - 02-18-2020 04:08 PM

this would be a scary changer for a school like houston and smu.. and it would then weaken the power 5

houston could probably start having p5 level rosters after a few years of this rule.... there are tons of bama/lsu backups i know that would have transfered back to houston (they are from houston) if they didnt have to wait..

i know the acc supports this rule... but they arent a recruting power as a league...The SEC will strongly oppose this ...sec has 4/5 stars playing backup/depth for 3 years waiting their turn or grad transfer...this rule if passed could be the beginning of the end of SEC domination

Guess that's why the Big 10 and ACC are pushing it forward.

unlikely... itll be more of an bad team problem than good (like memphis atm)...

the grad transfer rule is out there already as a reference..rarely are star players from good teams grad transferring to big p5 (look at the overall percentage, not individual cases..its extremely tiny for those its available to)

no one wants to lose being a star of a good team to potentially go fight for a spot on a team that might not be as good as a bench player (too much risk)...good players on bad teams are the ones that tend to grad transfer..but thats true everywhere, not just p5, look at wakes qb grad transferring to Georgia

the one big negative consequence that could affect the aac: this could make losing coaches DEVASTATING...there will be mass transfers on coach firings ...and we lose coaches often

RE: Transfer Rules to Change - Aztec Since 88 - 02-18-2020 04:37 PM

The positives of the rule is players no longer have to petition to become eligible immediately. Right now it seams the NCAA is arbitrary in granting immediate eligibility for athletes. Most non-revenue sports like Golf, Tennis, Water Polo already allow a player to play immediately anyways when they transfer

The negatives are if a FCS or G5 team lands a stud or under recruited player, they could lose them to bigger P5 schools, especially when name likeness and image takes effect. The opportunities for money will be much greater at a P5 school. Would a Marshal Faulk stay at SDSU till he went pro or would he transfer to an LSU and cash in while in college?

RE: Transfer Rules to Change - BigHouston - 02-18-2020 04:52 PM

As for Houston this would be phenomenal... And for this league it would only translate in handcuffing the NY6 bowl game.

I like it... Hope it passes.

RE: Transfer Rules to Change - SMUleopold - 02-18-2020 05:35 PM

I don't think SMU would be any more in favor of it than any other school because I don't think anyone knows the full ramifications of this change. Keep in mind, this can be a dual edged sword - just ask Rice, Stanford, UConn, and anyone else who have lost a number of full time starters to the portal already. Heck, we lost a record setting QB and our best defensive player last year ourselves.

That being said, I tend to be against it because the current grad-transfer rule encourages and emphasizes GETTING THE DEGREE. Say what you want, but that should be the primary goal for any athlete at any school, and once you get the degree good luck and god bless - go wherever you want to. Changing the rule may dilute that, but I'll admit I certainly may be wrong and hope I am.

RE: Transfer Rules to Change - Noise Penalty - 02-18-2020 05:40 PM

Wait until your top players get poached by P6 teams because they don't have to sit out a year.

RE: Transfer Rules to Change - invisiblehand - 02-18-2020 05:47 PM

My problem is that it basically cements in the haves and the have-nots.

It will become incredibly hard to rebuild a bad team, because year after year, your most promising players could be poached with no repercussion and your only avenue to get better will be to take the castoffs from the bigger schools. Small schools with star players better get those stars a GF to try and anchor them close to home.

It's like junior college.

I envision losing some, but gaining more than we lose.

RE: Transfer Rules to Change - oasispirate - 02-18-2020 08:41 PM

Yeah I don't see how this is good for a non Power 5. There is a pecking order here fellas. Even on the P5 level, Wake Forest lost Jamie Newman QB (from NC) to Georgia. WF is on solid footing right now. NCSU lost a 1st team All ACC OL last week as a grad transfer. If they can lose these players, wait till the P5 can get their hands on your top talent.

RE: Transfer Rules to Change - slhNavy91 - 02-18-2020 08:45 PM

We're just different from any other programs -- exceptions being Air Force and Army West Point -- and how this could/would impact Navy doesn't have much bearing on other programs' reactions.

If someone is REALLY curious, ask and I'll offer my opinion of Navy perspective.

Yup. That was my first thought. My second, is that if Im building a G5 team---Im building my recruiting class as much as possible from F, RS-F. and Sophs from the portal. I will due very little HS recruiting anymore. In fact--if I can fill all 25 slots with F, RS-F, and Soph transfers---I would prefer it to signing a single HS kid.

Why? Becasue if I build a team with F, RS-F, and Soph (who have not redshirted) transfers from the portal---I get players that have already had 1-2 years in a college nutrition and training program---but they all still have at least 3 years left to play. Better yet---none of these kids Im bringing in from the portal can transfer without sitting out a year---so they are far less likely to leave after they transfer here. That means my program is likely to be more consistent, suffer fewer future transfers, and be more insulated from any "mass transfer move" after a coaching change. Additionally---by using my scholarships on transfers rather than HS freshman---Im not forced to use 25 scholarship roster slots on HS freshman who largely have little chance of contributing in the current year. Thats 23% of your 105 man summer camp roster and its almost 30% of your total scholarship slots. Remember---those kids are actually the MOST likey to leave your program after youve invested a year or two in them (and the ones with the most promise are the most likely to leave). Finally--by using the portal---Im able to instantly fill holes in my roster far more effectively with guys ready to play NOW. I can retool much quicker that way.

My feeling is---the really smart coaches---especially at the G5 level--- are going to completely change the way they recruit. I dont see this as a disaster---I just see it as something you need to properly react to.
