Judges group wants to discuss Stone sentencing - bullet - 02-18-2020 11:38 AM https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2020/02/17/roger-stone-sentence-judges-worried-political-interference/4788155002/ "A national association of federal judges has called an emergency meeting Tuesday to address growing concerns about the intervention of Justice Department officials and President Donald Trump in politically sensitive cases, the group’s president said Monday...." Wonder if this group even exists? Searched through 6 pages of Google listings and couldn't find a website or even a wiki article on this "organization." When have judges been concerned about a President trying to see that justice is done and that sentencing is not excessive? I could see if he were trying to influence a longer sentence. But wanting a more lenient sentence? And how about a bunch of judges who are not on a case trying to get a more stringent sentence? RE: Judges group wants to discuss Stone sentencing - banker - 02-18-2020 11:59 AM The Federal Judges Association (FJA) is a thing. I am assuming that's the group they are referencing as I don't read USA Today any longer. RE: Judges group wants to discuss Stone sentencing - SoMs Eagle - 02-18-2020 12:46 PM Proves these judges, whoever they are, can double down on stupid. TDS causes people on the edge to flip on over.... Its always been entirely up to judges to decide if Republicans should get higher sentences than Democrats. They seem quite sure that Republicans should get life sentences for violations they wouldn't even bother charging a Democrat with. Seems to me this hate filled left wing nut job cabal of judges already made that decision some time ago---but they probably should meet and figure out good talking points to explain their scheme to have a two tier justice system that severely punishes anyone who loves America. RE: Judges group wants to discuss Stone sentencing - Mr_XcentricK - 02-18-2020 01:01 PM Diseases and syndromes usually take the name of patient zero. So we can all agree Trump is one deranged moron. So you guys get triggered by 1500 judges that know more about the law than you or Trump. Classic TDS! Edit From the linked article: Philadelphia U.S. District Judge Cynthia Rufe, who heads the independent Federal Judges Association, said the group “could not wait” until its spring conference to weigh in on a deepening crisis that has enveloped the Justice Department and Attorney General William Barr. Before you ask Rufe was out on the bench by President G W Bush. RE: Judges group wants to discuss Stone sentencing - Claw - 02-18-2020 01:03 PM So it is ok for them to do something they are criticizing Trump for doing? RE: Judges group wants to discuss Stone sentencing - bullet - 02-18-2020 03:22 PM https://www.nationalreview.com/2020/02/roger-stone-double-standard/ Debated putting this is a separate thread. It pretty clearly lays out the contradictions. "...George Papadopoulos was convicted of making a trivial false statement about the date of a meeting. Roger Stone was convicted of obstruction long after the special counsel knew there was no Trump–Russia conspiracy, even though his meanderings did not impede the investigation in any meaningful way. And in the case of Michael Flynn’s false-statements conviction, as McCabe himself acknowledged to the House Intelligence Committee, even the agents who interviewed him did not believe he intentionally misled them. Now, if your contention is that misleading the authorities is wrong regardless of the outcome, I concur. The question then becomes: Why didn’t McCabe, James Clapper, John Brennan, and James Comey, or others who pushed Russia-criminal conspiracy theories, ever face any consequences for their own lying?... Clapper was asked, “Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions, or hundreds of millions of Americans?” There is no ambiguity in that question. Clapper could have answered, “That’s not something I can discuss” or “That’s not something I should discuss.” Instead, he declared, “No, sir. . . . Not wittingly.” That was a lie, under oath, about an issue far more relevant than anything Stone or Flynn or Papadopoulos could ever have even spoken to. It did nothing to slow Clapper’s career. In fact, Clapper was able to parlay his position into a media gig, where he helped fuel destructive paranoia about our elections...." "...It is well-established case law that a defendant cannot be convicted on evidence that was wrongfully collected by law enforcement. The interesting and equitable question is whether Congress and, subsequently, the special counsel had a sufficiently justifiable reason to investigate Stone in the first place. The same question can be asked regarding those other Trump campaign associates George Papadopoulos and Carter Page, former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn, and possibly Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort. The DOJ inspector general’s sterile report notwithstanding, I don’t believe — based on considerable experience conducting and managing counterintelligence investigations — that McCabe and fired FBI director James Comey had sufficient legal basis to open the original FBI investigation, particularly one to target U.S. persons, and from which flowed the prosecution of Stone. There is a reasonable chance that U.S. Attorney John Durham may reach the same conclusion as a result of his investigative efforts...." |
