Budget issues? - WMU2013 - 02-13-2020 01:37 PM

Seems strange we lost a coach to Army and Navy, great programs. But, i liked Adams a lot. During the PJ Fleck regime, we rarely lost a coach. Is Lester not getting the same support for salary for assistants? Thoughts?

PJ was better than Lester at a lot of things, coaching and fundraising in particular.

We lost Vinson Reynolds, Luke Getsy, Charles Huff, Tim McGarigle. It happens. If we lost him to Podunk St. A&M, then that's a problem.

I agree it's inaccurate to say Fleck rarely lost coaches. However..

Reynolds- Syracuse
Getsy- NFL
Huff- Penn State
McGarigle- Illinois

IMO it's a bit more of a concern to lose them to other G5 programs. Though there's certainly an argument to be made that the jobs our current coaches have taken are still a step up.

Coaching at the assistant level is always a carousel. Just look at the Fleck and Lester path to WMU. Many times if a G5 coach looks like he could end up at the P5 level assistant coaches sense that. Look at the money these P5 schools throw around for coaches. MAC schools can't even match those numbers for entire program budgets without tapping into their general funds.

It's also a fallacy to compare WMU's resources with the military academies. They have nearly unlimited resources.

Michigan State is giving new HC Tucker a $3 million pool for assistant coaches according to FREEP.

MAC head coaches don't get that much.

So you can have
30 @ $100,000 each
10 @ $300,000 each
Or a mix. For real, money is not the issue for them.

Can only have ten paid on-field coaches.

WMU lost several coaches during PJ, but there's more that you miss out on. (sorry if someone else mentioned it)
Everyone and their brother knew PJ would be on his way up eventually, so many coaches thought it worth while to wait and follow him. Lester seems content here, and likely will not move on to a P5 head job. So as an assistant in D1 it's about upward mobility, and staying with Lester won't allow that.

If this is the case he's likely winning 6-8 games a year probably without a championship.

Money talks... If Lester puts together a couple stellar years here at WMU and brings in a couple Championships... I would not be surprised in the least that he would move on up the ladder. Even if it was to be an OC at a P5 with a larger salary. There are only two outcomes for him here at WMU... he overstays and gets the boot, or he takes an opportunity.

I just don't have enough confidence in the guy to see him winning many MAC Championships here... and leaving.

What is TL's vision for his own future?

They have to cut 500k over next two years. It was announced to the whole staff in August

I'm sure he would. The Lester seems likely to stay is based on my observation.

I don't think we are in a position to even speculate.

He hasn't done anything to garner any sort of attention. However... if he does... then he's going to get some attention. PJ left here and is now doing work... TL somehow pulls something similar and he's going to get a shot...

No way he doesn't entertain the opportunity to move up the ladder under those circumstances.

As I said earlier.. I just don't see him having the chops to get this program to the point where thats even an issue.
