Quote:Most of the 53,000 spectators who jammed into the 52,000-seat stadium did. Last year an Alabama player, Darwin Holt, had smashed Georgia Tech's Chick Graning in the face with his left elbow and forearm, in an unnecessary block when an Alabama teammate signaled for a fair catch on a punt. After the catch, though possibly before the referee's whistle had sounded. Holt hit Graning, rising off his feet as he drove his arm up under the taller Tech player's face guard. Graning was helped off the field with injuries diagnosed later as 1) fracture of the alveolar process (facial bones), 2) five missing upper front teeth, 3) fracture of the nasal bone, 4) fracture of the right maxillary sinus and the sinus filled with blood, 5) fracture of the right zygomatic process (bone beneath the right eye), 6) cerebral concussion and 7) possible fracture of the base of the skull.

That and the SEC's proclivity to allow teams to sign hundreds of players and then cut hundreds of players who didn't make it every year -- leaving them without a scholarship at all to attend -- led to GT leaving the SEC.

If you had just let Bear Bryant take an unprotected full speed hit to the cranium they probably would have called it even and not thrown anything.

But Maryland was probably the first where someone -- the mother of Carlos Boozer, who is now on ACCN -- was struck by a water bottle hard enough to require emergency medical treatment. Happened in 2001 and we're fortunate more weren't injured. It was an extremely ugly, dangerous scene. Afterwards, the University of Maryland treated it as no big deal. One of the many reasons Duke won't be scheduling Maryland in basketball or any other sport.

I remember that incident. Total BS the way Merryland handled it. Have any ACC scheduled Maryland?

MD used to throw oranges filled with D sized batteries in Football - I would not go to a game at MD, WVa, or Philadephia Eagles without a knife and two rolls of quarters.

Mackerels.

That is what Georgia Tech fans threw at ND players in the Seventies.

This is an actual poll?

Isn't that a Catholic thing? I seem to recall Nebraska and others doing that to ND.

I forgot about that. The Terp fans were also throwing batteries. Some incredible brawls happened on the court in the ACC in the late 1950s and early 1960s but off the court there’s nothing that’s ever happened in the ACC like what happened when Duke visited College Park in the last few years before the Terps left the conference.

Trust me, if the Terps ever want to get back in the ACC, don’t say no, say Hell NO!

By the way, check out what Jay Williams did to Maryland.

Ten point comeback in last minute. The only good thing about Maryland leaving is that Duke owns Maryland forever!

Its more an anti-Catholic thing.

Protestant bigots for years used to deride Catholics as "Mackerel Snappers" because they were supposed to eat fish on Fridays during Lent.

That's what I meant. And boy that's a real reach for a pejorative.

Nike is better at cheating and getting away with it. Adidas must be new to this game or got some people with loose lips.

I went to the NCSU vs WVU game this past Sept and had no issues. In fact, the Eeers were downright hospitable.

No, it isn't. Bigotry is bigotry. It wasn't meant by them to be anything but a pejorative.

"The rivalry grew in 1978 as angry Georgia Tech fans pelted the Notre Dame sidelines with bottles during the game, to the point where Devine was concerned about team safety.

They also threw fish in a reference to the derogatory term for Catholics “mackerel snappers,” said Sperber. But the anti-Catholicism of the 1970s was nothing compared to what Rockne faced in the 1920s, when the Klan attempted to march on the university."

It's a reach for a pejorative in that how far down the list of things did you have to go before you settle on eating fish on Friday to be the focal point of ridicule?
