Where are your priorities? - Grommet - 02-11-2020 05:47 PM

This will prob cause some 05-stirthepot, but it's honestly something I've wondered for a while: which ODU sport has your undying loyalty?

I think I kept it anonymous, but feel free to respond of you want.

I think I did something wrong. I can't edit poll choices? C'est la vie.

Maybe I'll do hourly pools until I get the hang of them...

Football for sure

Same, and more so since the transition to FBS.

Basketball. Enjoy going to football games, but they play for nothing but pride. Then again, basketball is approaching the same scenario.

I've enjoyed many downs of ODU football, but basketball (especially MBB) takes priority for me. If one of the purposes of college athletics is to promote the university and the programs therein, basketball does the job more efficiently of the two. When we stink we really stink, but every year we're a few conference tournament games away from a shot at national exposure. Hope springs eternal, yada yada yada

I appreciate your response, but that's kind of an odd answer. None of our SAs play for anything other than pride (scholly/stipend aside). Is basketball playing for cash and prizes? Or are you referring to the post-season? And if so, how is (best-case scenario) a second-round NCAA game better than a CUSA bowl?

Could it be argued that 2018's VT win, last year's games vs VT and UVA (before the wheel's really fell off), and possibly this yr vs Wake (we'll see; that's still a long way off) will do more than a first-round tourney game could wrt national exposure? Nationally broadcast games vs staunch, well-known opponents and all that.

And I'm with you re:HSE. I'd rather be optimistic and then disappointed than pessimistic and then miserable anyway...

Football and basketball pretty even for me. My excitement level varies. I’ve definitely been more excited about basketball the last few years but that tide might be turning.

Basketball first, but I love the football team so they’re pretty close

Basketball always has a far fetched chance to win a championship. Football can go undefeated and still not win anything but a nice bowl game.

I'd still take a bowl win over an FCS national title, which sounds great when you're in FCS, but not when you move up. The only reason anyone pays attention to the FCS playoffs is if a school wins a bunch of them, like App State or North Dakota State. It was a fine goal for a program at that level, but we've moved on.

RE: Where are your priorities? - ODUalum78 - 02-11-2020 08:39 PM

ODU beating VT in football, and followed up by the performance vs UVA last year did more for our national relevance than anything since the MBB win vs Georgetown in 2009.

Further, unless they specifically follow CUSA, they have no idea how badly we did in both of those seasons otherwise.
So, in any given conversation, "Oh you guys beat VT and almost beat a ranked UVA; you guys have great football!"

04-cheers

App State won three FCS titles but if you ask 100 sports fans to come up with an App memory, I'll say 98 respond with the Michigan win.

I voted for football and basketball. But if I had to rank them football would be 1, men's bball is 2, baseball at 3, women's bball 4 and soccer at 5.

I don't miss home football or bball games in any season. I get a voucher book for baseball but miss more than I attend. I go to a game here or there for soccer and the lady monarchs.

The rest I hope do well but I'm likely not going to their games/events regardless.

I don't care about the national exposure as much as the experience. Taking off a day off work by myself to watch us play in the Bahamas against a MAC school on TV was just anticlimactic. And that was our best season.
