Absolutely the way I feel now.

Same here. We left yesterday when their lead got to 9. It’ll be hard for me to ever buy into any preseason hype and expectations from Penny again seeing as to what a sh-t show this year turned into.

Got ya... so you missed the part where they scrambled back to a tie momentarily? I could see how someone who missed those moments in games repeatedly could simply see this team as a group of overhyped professionals, rather than a bunch of kids who have flashes of talent and a lot of hustle, but just have a hard time putting together a consistent attack, due to a variety of factors.

Good teams are losing to all kinds of crap this year, and we may no longer be one of those good teams, which definitely sucks given the pre-season expectations. It is what it is.

Yeah, I’ve been rooting for Memphis for too many good and bad years to see our team’s performance as life or death.

T4L but this season sux

Oh, true. This season will go into the “what could have been” file.

Twelve years ago my family had to leave the room as I was watching the last game of that season. They'll never have to do that again. Watching that performance up close and personal yesterday didn't have a whole lot of happy moments, but it's just a game. There are way more important things in life than basketball.

That officiating crew, on the other hand, was one of the worst I've ever seen (and I've seen some pretty bad ones), especially the bald dude. Don't know whether we got the worst end of it or whether South Florida did, but regardless, they were terrible.

RE: Commercial Appeal Article - jmar2211 - 02-09-2020 02:41 PM

Name a team that loses a lottery pick a few games in potentially a 1st team all american that the offense was going to be predicated on... A guard who's struggled all year (boogie) living nowhere near up to the expectations people had for him... lose lestor for a portion of the season and then lose DJ who by default is the second most important player on the roster at this point.

They shouldn't have lost yesterday, that's understandable, but name another team in the country that has dealt with this type of drama and injuries all season? Guarantee no one can. I dont make excuses for anything or anyone, but these are just all facts, this isnt the "team" that was supposed to be out there each game.

Sports can be very humbling... which is why it’s usually best to be humble and gracious instead of boastful and bold. Penny, as long as I’ve followed him, was always gracious and humble. This year, with the smoke and the jealousy talk, seemed out of character for him.

I agree with you. It seems like he let the momentum from building that class get the best of him instead of focusing on them being a young team and will need time bring it together.

Still can't lose that game yesterday.

They gotta win everything else at home, steal one they are not favored in on the road and get to the conference tournament final to have any shot at the big dance.

Otherwise 6 years in a row sitting it out.

or we could just win the AAC tourney...

Yes, whoever wins the AAC conference tournament punches their ticket to the big dance.

If you are including me in you guys, 1. I am not bashing in any way. 2. I never said I was done with them. I will continue to watch every game, but emotionally I will not get excited if we win or upset if we lose. It is what it is. Next season I hope we are a better team.

Puts the present situation in perspective and explains why it is nuts to blame Penny and the team for not meeting preseason expectations. Very well written and perfectly logical. Those of you who relish tearing down Penny and our players should read it.

I mean, it’s attacking a straw man, but whatever.

I think everyone was onboard with revising expectations when Wiseman quit. But this team has regressed since then and it started before Jeffries got hurt.

RE: Commercial Appeal Article - Marc Mensa - 02-09-2020 06:38 PM

Any Memphis coach who loses at home to a 10-12 USF squad is going to catch some heat; & thank god expectations are such.

RE: Commercial Appeal Article - Jedi Master Sipho-Dyas - 02-09-2020 06:59 PM

Attacking Penny or anyone over preseaon hype just seems pathetic imo. This is NOT the team that was assembled before the season. Too many crazy things have happens to this team to be calling out coaches for (pre-Wiseman debacle) expectations.

There has never been a season with so much bad luck that the coaches and team really had no control over. We lost the #1 recruit in the nation, our 2nd best remaining player and more than half of the rest of the team has missed time with injuries.

How can any fair, level headed fan be trashing the coach and staff?

What a miserable place this is.

Penny would have been absolutely correct IF he had his original #1 recruiting class.
He is not responsible for all of the terrible things that have happened through NO FAULT of his own. I do not think their is any coach that could have done as well with the hand that he was dealt during the season.

Calipari would be struggling with this current situation.

He lost in the 1st round of the NIT with an even deeper and more talented roster than we have right now.

17-6 is not even that bad, its just bad because of the pre Wisemen expectations. With this current roster and inexperience its not all that bad.

07-coffee3 Maybe he wanted to put that target on the players backs to make them realize that there was very high expectations for them and he knew he had the talent to back it up at the time. We wanted all the the smoke and we got it but our hose to put the fire out got a very very big hole in it.

The preseason hype was around having the top ranked class.

Then the NCAA showed up and derailed it.

Then Wiseman listened to outsiders and family and left instead of sticking with his teammates and mentor.

Then came the flu bug.

Then came the injuries.

That's how the losses came. Flu and injuries.

The above had nothing to do with Penny at all or any hype letdown.

Sh!t happens.

We need more Tigers like you for sure.

Exactly, if everyone would get up and leave when the team gets down it will teach the team a lesson!
02-13-banana I really hope you are saying that in jest.
