New FBS programs in the coming decade - Michael in Raleigh - 02-06-2020 05:37 PM

The 2010's saw 11 programs join the FBS level.

UTSA
Charlotte
Old Dominion
Texas State
South Alabama
Georgia State
Georgia Southern
Coastal Carolina
Appalachian State
Liberty
UMass

What are your predictions of current FCS teams, or even non existent football teams, that will join FBS by 2030? And what league, if any, will take them?

I wonder if NDSU will get tired of winning FCS titles and go as a FBS indy or in a pair as a football only to the MAC w SDSU

With G5 incentivized not to expand to prevent further splitting up CFP payouts, I anticipate that number will be much lower.

I'm predicting 3:
James Madison
Missouri State
North Dakota ST (FB-only)

RE: New FBS programs in the coming decade - RutgersGuy - 02-06-2020 05:54 PM

I would say the best bets are the 2 Dakota States, Montana, Mizz St, Delaware and JMU

RE: New FBS programs in the coming decade - Michael in Raleigh - 02-06-2020 05:55 PM

NCA&T and Jacksonville State (in Alabama) are a couple of names I see tossed around, but I can't figure out where their landing spots would be.

RE: New FBS programs in the coming decade - Fresno St. Alum - 02-06-2020 05:59 PM

what is to stop Liberty, UConn, UMass, JMU, Delaware, Missouri St., NDSU, SDSU from starting a FBS only conf. I know they won't get any of the G5 tie in money, but none of them do now anyway. Liberty got a bowl gm and I'm sure a few of these could too, plus a conf. championship.

I figure Army if they ever did anything it would be fb only in the AAC

FBS is football only.

How is that better for UMass/UConn than remaining Independent and having better schedule flexibility?

NDSU is a curious case. They've had the best run of any school since FCS/1-AA's inception in 1978, with 8 championships in 9 years. Most predecessors who won multiple championships, i.e., App State, Georgia Southern, and Marshall, moved on. Youngstown State, winners of 4 1990's national titles, stayed put in 1-AA/FCS.

I think NDSU has several things that keep them at the FCS level. First, they already have a local TV deal that provides revenue comparable to what several G5 leagues offer. There may not be the same financial payoff for moving to FBS as there has been for other schools who moved up.

Second, they do not necessarily have a conference waiting for them. The AAC would be too big of a jump, realistically. The MAC may be too far for MAC members' tastes. The MWC is even farther, and they may see a net gain financially by adding NDSU. C-USA and the Sun Belt are just too far.

Third, maybe they are just content dominating FCS. Who knows? If App State had followed up their '05, '06, and '07 championships with another 5 out of 6, maybe the move to the Sun Belt wouldn't have seemed as appealing. I don't know. Maybe it's just one of things where, "Don't mess with happy," fits the bill.

All that said, I wonder if a time will come where NDSU sees the appeal of FBS. For App State, I dont think it has just been the move to the Sun Belt itself. It's been the opportunity to take on Wake Forest and Miami at home; UNC and USC on the road; ECU in a four game series; and other exciting non conference games. I can say that the past few years as an FBS program have been every bit as exciting as those FCS championship years. I suppose NDSU doesn't feel the same way, at least not yet.

James Madison and Missouri State would be at the top of the list, but I don't think anyone moves up with all the uncertainty over pay to play. And I don't think the conferences want any new schools.

Wichita State, UTA and Little Rock would have homes already.

Northeast:
Umass.
UConn.
Albany
Delaware
E. Kentucky
Fordham since they do have resources
James Madison
New Hampshire
Stony Brook
Towson
VCU
Army

Southeast:
Liberty
East Tenn. State
Florida A&M
FGCU
Jacksonville State
Kennesaw State
NC A&T
north Florida
Chattanooga
Tenn. State
W. Carolina
North Alabama
Florida Tech and West Florida could grow into large programs further down the road.

Midwest:
Dayton
Illinois State
Indiana State
Southern Illinois
Wis.-Green Bay
Milwaukee
Youngstown State
U. Of Indianapolis, Lindenwood and Wayne State Mich. all could access the pro-stadiums.

Northern States:
Northern Iowa
Montana
Montana State
Northern Colorado
North Dakota State
South Dakota State
E. Washington
Idaho
Weber State
Fort Hays State

South Gulf Coast:
UCA
Incarnate Word
Lamar
McNeese State
Missouri State
Sam Houston State
SFAU
UTRGV
Texas Southern
Midwestern State
Jackson State
Central Oklahoma

West Coast:
UC-Davis
Cal Poly
Fullerton State
Long Beach State
Sacramento State
Northern Arizona
Dixie State
CSU-Dominguez Hills do have an on campus stadium that house a MLS team.
East Bay State
Hawaii
New Mexico State
West Texas A&M

I picked D2 schools with large stadiums that could be easily upgraded quickly. This would give Indy schools a new conference.

sell recruits on a conf championship and maybe whatever bowl tie ins vs getting killed by schools who UConn/UMass are the body bag gm.

Are there any schools that might go from a standing start to FBS? FGCU and North Florida seem to be the ones posters see doing it, but are there any other reasonable possibilities? Wichita State already has AAC membership so there's no incentive for them to start a team. Most of the big public Southern schools either already have a program or for various reasons are no threat to start one (VCU, George Mason).

Montana State
Delaware
Missouri State
JMU

Schools with the potential to move in a decade or so with more investment and success:
New Hampshire
Maine
Rhode Island
NC A&T
FAMU

Both of these schools were actually invited to the Sunbelt in the past. Just throwing my two cents in not trying to make a point.

I think the Dakotas are a lot like the Montana schools: they're happy in FCS. Delaware would be the same story. URI has no desire for FBS,.nor does New Hampshire. Maine, while a good program, falls in line with the Dakotas and the Montanas- happy in FCS. Now NC A&T could be a possibility, as well as Mizzou State & JMU. Dunno about FAMU.
