Dantonio out at Mich St - stever20 - 02-04-2020 03:13 PM

Huge news.... something seems crazy off here...

Since you made a dedicated thread:

“Mr. Fickell, Michigan State University is on line one.”

RE: Dantonio out at Mich St - IWokeUpLikeThis - 02-04-2020 03:16 PM

Mark Dantonio returned Michigan St to elite status by going 7-1 or 8-0 5 of 6 years from 2010-2015.
He turned the "Big 3" into the "Big 4" by dominating the UM/MSU series winning 7 of 8.

Then the last 4 years the wheels completely came off out of nowhere.

he took advantage of the Brady Hoke error at Michigan. And also what happened at Penn St. Since Franklin and Harbaugh took over at Penn St/Michigan- things totally different. Kind of saved quite frankly by Maryland/Rutgers

The frontrunner to replace Mark Dantonio as Michigan State football coach is Luke Fickell, according to sources with knowledge of the athletic department's thinking.

RE: Dantonio out at Mich St - BearcatMan - 02-04-2020 03:25 PM

"The former OSU DC and current Cincinnati HC has built significant upward momentum for the program on the back of some talented transfers and underrated recruits from the state of Ohio jumps for Michigan State after the previous coach is told to leave behind suspect circumstances with a lackluster offense and a downturn in recruiting developed what many believed to be a stagnant program."

The articles from 2007 could just be re-written again...****...

Absolutely no clue why he'd leave for this ****-show, especially when the best you can likely do is 3rd in your own division at the moment...but with our luck, he'll be moving up to Lansing.

As regards timing, Dantonio collected a $4.3MM bonus just a couple weeks ago. It was incumbent on him being MSU HC at a certain date.

I think it's as simple as that.

MSU admins went along with that "gaming of the system" as a bit of a "lifetime achievement reward/bonus" for Dantonio.

And Dantonio ALSO went 2-1 against Ohio State and Urban Meyer in the 2012-2015 era. He ALSO won 2 B1G titles in that time span, an era where the Buckeye Machine was operating at full efficiency.

That cannot be explained away as "taking advantage of errors at U-M and Penn State."

Note that even after Harbuagh and Franklin have righted their ships at their respective schools, they've combined for all of 1 B1G title while dealing with the "Buckeye Death Star." 1 less combined than Dantonio had on his own.

Dantonio was a rather good coach. That is a fact.

He had a stellar 6-6 season with the OSU in 2011.

Yet suddenly became a pedestrian coach once Harbaugh joined. And no I don't count the 2015 win when the Punter possibly threw the game.

having 1 tough game vs 3 tough games is a lot different animal. He was 17-19 the last 4 years in Big Ten play. with of the 17 wins 7 of them vs Maryland and Rutgers... He totally took advantage of what was absolutely a down Big Ten East at the time.

You’re right, Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State have been taking advantage of a “down” Michigan State.

Stever: bad at arguments.

A lot more of that has to do with the divisional alignments.

it moved to East-West in 2014, before that Dantonio was playing Northwestern, Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, and Nebraska...literally flipped 2 losses every year not having to play OSU and PSU and replacing them with Northwestern, Minny, and Nebraska. Since it moved to East-West, he's horrible...and really, I'd say that reflects what the program will experience from here on out. They're 3rd place at absolute best in their own division...meaning a 9-win season is incredibly good.

RE: Dantonio out at Mich St - stever20 - 02-04-2020 03:44 PM

Michigan St from 2012-2016 was every single year in the top 5 in Big Ten Recruiting.

last year they had the #7 class in recruiting
this year they have the #10 class in recruiting

yeah that might have something to do with Franklin and Harbaugh.....

Ironically, that could genuinely play into Fickell's thinking here. Moving into a trainwreck situation with lots of talent leaving and not much coming into the immediate. Sounds like OSU in 2011. He might still be scarred from that experience.

With the current situation, MSU would need to offer a very lengthy contract and a pretty heavy guarantee. Like Baylor did, they are certainly capable of doing so.

I think in these situations, the simplest answer is usually the correct one. He'll probably leave.

But UC knows the formula for success in their program, so if he does, we'll be in good hands with Marcus Freeman.

actually you knew his days were numbered.... they haven't been good at all lately at all like I said- 17-19 in conference play last 4 years. It was going to be a nasty exit regardless.

RE: Dantonio out at Mich St - IWokeUpLikeThis - 02-04-2020 03:51 PM

Michigan St swept the B1G East in 2015 en route to the CFP. MSU swept the Big Ten in 2013 (beating UM/OSU, PSU was 7-5) en route to winning the Rose Bowl.

Seems like Pat Narduzzi could also be a strong candidate for the job.
