Best Drexel Team - dan10 - 01-23-2020 03:19 PM

I think this is a compelling discussion after looking at the stats and data. So do you got? '95-'96 Malik led team or '11-'12 Massenat led team?

Scoring:
Malik- #3 all time scoring for Drexel
Mike DeRocckis- #7 (freshman in that year)
Jeff Myers- #15

Fouch- #5
Frantz- #6
Lee- #10 (in only 3 years, likely to have passed Malik had he stayed) (freshman that year)
Givens- #22

Rebounding:
Malik- #1

Samme- #3
McCoy- #5
Ruffin- #7

Assists:
DeRocckis- #13
Overby- #14

Frantz- #3

Starts:
Malik- 119 (#4)
DeRocckis- 119 (#4)

Frantz- 128 (#1)
Thomas- 121 (#2)
McCoy- 120 (#3)

Games played:
Malik- 120 (#8)

Frantz- 128 (#1)
McCoy- 128 (#1)
Samme- 128 (#1)
Fouch- 126 (#4)
Ruffin- 125 (#5)
Thomas- 124 (#6)

The obvious answer is the Malik led team because they danced and won a game. However best and most successful are different discussions, and quite honestly, probably not much of a discussion. To me the best team was '11-'12 team. That was such a deep and talented team and just how much they stayed together and ended up all over our record books tells me it was the best team to play at Drexel. Malik was dominant and the best player through our program, but that was really a one man team.

I voted for the 96 team, because that was my senior year in college and I felt like I was a part of those teams. Their only losses were to Murray State, in a game in which they lead for 39:59, Oklahoma on the road in a game where they were in a position to win, and BU at home, who was the 2nd best team in the NAC.

The 11-12 team lost to Norfolk State, Virginia, Delaware, Georgia State, and St. Joes.

Neither team played a very difficult OOC schedule. But the CAA in 11-12 was far tougher than the NAC in 96-96.

Norfolk State had an NBA player and won a tournament game. I think Virginia was a tournament team that year as well.

Ok I think we need 2 categories for this discussion - basically so we can honor them both.

Best team - 11-12, without a doubt in my opinion, great team with great players.. That team had one of the best stretches ever by a Drexel team. They had the look of Sweet 16 team. If they had they only been given a chance....

Most successful team - goes to 95-96 for obvious reasons, but the talent, outside of Malik, did not compare to the 11-12 team

Malik was clearly the best Drexel player ever, but I wish some of you guys would have had the opportunity to see Michael Anderson. He was a special player who would be ever bit as dominate in todays game as he was then. Sorry couldn't help it - had to throw a note in there.

Ahem, it was scientifically proven that the 11-12 team wasn't even the best team of the Flint Era:

I agree Spearsie which is why I said the same and voted as such. I think '11-'12 was our best team.

As far as Drachen, I do remember you going through that exercise. I can still disagree with it. Ha.

In my opinion, Jeff Myers was as good as anyone on the 11-12 team. He averaged 18.7 ppg. Granted the America East was a lesser league than the CAA, however he lead them to the title game the following year. I believe he also was good enough to have played a little in NBA summer league games. Damion eventually became the better player, but I don't think he was as a freshman. Mike Derocckis as a freshman probably wasn't as good as Lee, but he had a higher scoring average and was a key piece on the team. Another guys who didn't have a stellar career but peaked as a senior was Cornelius Overby. Go watch the Syracuse game on JB youtube channel. He looked like he belonged with the Syracuse guards.

If not for Malik's sprained ankle I think they may well have beat the eventual runner-up Syracuse.

I am pretty surprised how the votes have gone, to be honest. I have no issues with it, just find it interesting. Hard to disagree with a team that finished the deal and won in the NCAA, I suppose.

RE: Best Drexel Team - DrachenFire - 01-29-2020 11:03 AM

I think if it could happen, it'd be a really interesting game to watch. Looking solely at stats and metrics, they seem to be really close. What pushed me to chose 95-96 over 11-12 was that the former were a more experienced team and that I think that team could have neutralized Samme, and the 11-12 team lost when Samme struggled and the whole program seemingly imploded after he graduated.

RE: Best Drexel Team - dan10 - 01-29-2020 12:06 PM

I agree Malik vs Samme would be a spectacle to watch. Samme's knack and effort towards rebounding was such a joy. I really think the 95-96 team would struggle overall with how many weapons were on the 11-12 team. I imagine Derrick Thomas (JR) would have been covering the rookie DeRocckis which would have been a joy to watch as well.
