Wow. This is the sort of thing I would have only expected to see on this board.

Also, I'm calling my shot right now. This is the beginning of the "New East Coast Conference" comprised of schools in the SunBelt and C-USA.

RE: ASun Committed to Expansion - Curtisc83 - 01-22-2020 06:36 PM

What’s the point in doing this?

Looks to me like the goal is to effectively move Bellarmine, Liberty, and North Alabama to a new conference that would also include several schools that might not currently be in Division I.

The other 7 A-Sun schools would move into a new shell conference and change the name of that conference to A-Sun, with the current conference getting a new name. And they say they're going to get March Madness autobids for both conferences.

I'm not alone.

I seem to recall that Division I had capped the number of conferences for the basketball tourney at the current number of 32.

<edit-article says there are a minimum of 34 at large positions which would allow 2 more conferences since they expanded to 68>

Essentially, the ASUN is kicking out Liberty, UNA, and Bellarmine.

Such a scumbag move considering they just invited UNA, Liberty, & Bellarmine. I hope another league steals one of the 7 and foils the plan.

RE: ASun Committed to Expansion - LUbball23 - 01-22-2020 07:24 PM

Maybe it opens the door for another school to move FBS independent?

It's basically kicking liberty, una, and bellarmine out but giving us opportunities to keep competing for auto bids with this new conference.

And LU has been crushing it in BBall. Maybe that’s why, sort of chanced the status quo of the ASUN when we came in.

Can UNA, Bellarmine, & Liberty invite 5 on their own to maintain their conference?

- Chicago St
- USI
- Valdosta St
- UWF
- UNG?
- UAH?

I had the same thought. To pull a 180, they must be pissed Liberty and its $ is dominating BB.

Well, now Boise State has a place to put their non-football sports! ;-)

RE: ASun Committed to Expansion - 3BNole - 01-22-2020 07:40 PM

Does anyone have a link to the Dec 13 press release that they reference?

It's actually linked in the words "public statement", but it's hard to tell. Here it is:

I'm not certain that is what they are doing just from reading this. They are talking about the 7 who have to stay to keep the autobid. The others are irrelevant to that. It says everyone is invited.

Thanks! This is so odd and out of left field... I’m not even sure what to think about it.

That is how I read it. The ASUN 7 are just those that have been members long enough to count as a "core"

Those 7 would pull a Catholic 7 and leave the conference to the new schools.

In their new conference they would automatically get a NCAA tournament bid.

They would then buy the A Sun name, Like Catholic 7 did to Big East.
