Hoops Recruiting - Big Red - 01-22-2020 01:51 PM

Well, NIU lost a recruit today, but this one should not be a head scratcher at all. Jace Howard committed to play at Michigan. First and foremost, I don't think anyone would think that NIU could ever out-recruit Michigan in anything, but also considering Jace's day, Juwan, is the head coach at Michigan...well.....of course.

So, file this one in the "Why Did This Take So Long?" category and move on.

The thought of it was fun while it lasted.

So, for an update on where the Huskies stand with recruits, they are currently listed as having 4 official offers on the table for 2020-21 and one offer for 2021-22.

For 2020-21:

They're all point guards right now...

PG - Ja'Moni Jones - 2* - 5'11" - East Kentwood HS, Kentwood, MI (I really want his name to be pronounced "Jay-Money").

PG - Jeremiah Williams - 2* - 6'3" - Simeon Academy, Chicago (at 6'3" he may not stay a PG)

PG - Latrell Wrightsell, Jr. - 2* - 6'1" - Omaha Central HS, Omaha, NE

PG - Luke Scheffers - 2* - 6'1" - St. Charles North HS, St. Charles

And for 2021-22:

PF - Scottie Ebube - 2* - 6'8" - Mundelein HS, Mundelein

I would really like for them to recruit someone who becomes a four year starter at point guard.

RE: Hoops Recruiting - dc1 - 01-22-2020 09:06 PM

Steven NIU, Trendon Hankerson is that guy.

He actually is.

Some additional info:

Ja'Moni Jones - NIU is his only official offer at this point

Jeremiah Williams - other offers from Western Michigan, SIU, Northern Iowa, Akron, Valparaiso, Milwaukee, and Detroit Mercy

Latrell Wrightsell, Jr. - other offers from Green Bay, South Dakota State, SIUe, Pittsburgh College, North Texas

Luke Scheffers - other offers from Grand Valley State and Lewis University

Scottie Ebube (2021) - other offers from SIU and Miami University

Jeremiah Williams would be a big catch if we can land him

Hankerson is a poor mans Scheffers. If he commits, which I don’t believe he will, he’s your 4 yr PG.

RE: Hoops Recruiting - dc1 - 01-23-2020 09:10 PM

Big red, I don’t know what you’re trying to say? Hankerson is currently on the Huskies team and is the starting point guard. He was here last year also and if he stays two more years he basically would’ve been the starting point guard most of that time.

RE: Hoops Recruiting - Growler83 - 01-23-2020 09:39 PM

I think some size is going to be needed with James and McCarty leaving. That’s is a lot of muscle to lose. Lee is a big talent but needs to stay healthy, Scott and Johnson are lean. Cole is still developing.

I was agreeing with you.

What? Are you related to Scheffers?

Red/Redd? Who's who?

GO HUSKIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: Hoops Recruiting - pvk75 - 01-24-2020 11:18 AM

I don't put a whole lot of stock in these star ratings. As soon a recruit gets offers from a few Big Name U's, their stock and rating go up because the "raters" assume the college recruiters know something they don't.

No way can these "raters" keep an eye on even a thousand of the 10,000+ kids playing h.s. bball. Maybe that's why so many get 2*. If some kid gets 4* or 5*, maybe then it's time to sit up and take notice, but even then ...

On the other hand, I don't know how I/we could pre-judge them anyway. Just sayin'. First time we get a real look is when they're out there on our court. Have to trust our recruiters (shivers while typing).

Also, how much height is NIU "losing" after this season?

Even I get confused some times.

Honestly, I signed up for this board a long time ago and never commented and then came back some time later and tried to sign up with the same username I typically have for these kinds of things nowadays and it wouldn't let me because the junk email I use for this stuff was already associated with my initial screen name (Big Red). So....I'm stuck with it...

How much height are we losing? Pretty much all of it that actually matters. Both James and McCarty are gone after this year. That leaves Nathan Scott (6'8"), Chris Johnson (6'7") and Keenan Cole (6'7") as the only "bigs" on the team.

Gotta figure Montgomery (if he's still the coach) is eyeing some JUCO big men to transfer in. Otherwise, there's nothing and what they do have, has barely ever played any minutes for NIU.

RE: Hoops Recruiting - pvk75 - 01-24-2020 04:24 PM

Gittin' a mite short in the treetops there, sportsfans. I thought Cole was supposed to be some kinda hotshot, but who knows if he gets no playing time. Then again, with Northern playing so tight on the scoreboard, I suppose that's understandable. Not impressed with what little I've seen of Scott and Johnson. Definitely need something there.

What is the scholarship count for 2020-21? Gotta be careful. Don't want to end up playing paper-the-country like Toledo football.

RE: Hoops Recruiting - dc1 - 01-24-2020 05:24 PM

Justin Lee also is 6’8 and very long he just needs to stay healthy and he will help tremendously. Chris Johnson is a good teammate but is really bad at basketball. Nathan Scott seems to have some shooting ability he was in rotation early on and not sure what happened.

Yeah, I missed Lee. I knew I did when I wrote that comment and still somehow forgot to put him in there. Oh well...

In regards to Johnson, I think he's a rebounder/defender (and I'm not 100% about the defending part) and that's it. He's not going to give much else. And the thing about Scott is he played a lot early and then has since kinda disappeared. Like you said, getting in to conference play and having all of these close games doesn't really lend itself to guys kinda learning the role. Guys like Cochrane and Beane have really stepped right in and acclimated well. They aren't finished products yet, but they at least can handle themselves in a D-1 game. I'm kinda hoping Lee is still just working his way back from injury as his absence has really disappointed me. Henry-Hayes' playing time has been a disappointment too but I think he's been nursing an injury as when he's been in lately, he's provided a big benefit. But then he disappears. Again, I think he's nursing an injury of some kind.

If all holds as it is right now, NIU will have 4 scholarships to offer for next year. They are losing Alize Travis, German, James and McCarty.

I think Hankerson is still considered a walk-on as it appears Beane got the scholarship everyone figured was going to Hankerson. At some point, they have to reward that kid and get him on scholarship unless there's something I don't know, like he's got some major academic scholarship which makes an athletic scholarship moot and is a great benefit to the program in that sense.
