New Arena in Hampton Roads? - ODUDrunkard13 - 01-13-2020 07:15 AM

The arena discussion for Hampton Roads is about to get ramped up again.

Quote:Called the Hampton Roads Regional Arena Authority and appointed by the governor, the proposed body would have the ability to issue debt to fund construction, retain state taxes generated by the facility to repay the cost of building and pass along additional revenue to whichever localities throw in on the project. This mirrored authorization given to Virginia Beach’s pursuit of an arena a few years back.

The regional body would also determine the location of the arena, which the bill says would need to be at least 15,000 seats and be able to host sporting events, conferences and concerts or other entertainment. Any Hampton Roads locality could participate.

Legislation is also being introduced for Norfolk to pursue the same thing.

Off topic - but what is the large construction happening across from the current convention center? Anyone know?

That is the Virginia Beach Sports Center. A multi-functional building designed to host amateur athletic competitions fro around the country.

There's a rule of thumb in print journalism called Betteridge's Law of Headlines, which goes like this: If the headline is framed as a question, the answer is usually "no".

There's plenty of exceptions to this, of course, but when it comes to building an arena in Hampton Roads, I think it holds up just fine.

Probably correct, but this fan-driven message board hardly could be confused for journalism.

Of course, it was just the scenic route to the punchline, which is "lol we're never getting a nice arena"
