Former USF OC, who was run out of town two years ago, is apparently going to get the gig at Syracuse?

Don't disagree that Bell wasn't better, but Gilbert was awful, too.

Oh, and thank you, UCF fan, for caring enough to look up USF's offensive stats for the last 3 years!

Gilbert is a Babers disciple. He'll do great at Cuse. Didn't USF win 10 games in 2017 under him? BL: If you have a solid QB he'll do great for you.

At best he's a journeyman. But hey, maybe he'll change his stripes!

Also, the FBS records of those teams:

2014 Bowling Green = 8-6
2015 Tulsa = 6-7
2016 Texas = 5-7
2017 USF = 10-2 (team underachieved offensively all season until UCF game)
2018 USF = 7-6

Not sure "great" is the word I'd use...

RE: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA - TexanMark - 01-11-2020 11:43 PM

We are pretty excited cuz he understands the offense that Dino wants to run. Our OL and QB play is expected to get much better next year.

From a fellow Cuse fan:

During his two seasons at USF under then head coach Charlie Strong, Gilbert led the Bulls' offense to a top 25 ranking in eight statistical categories in his first season. They included sixth in total offense (513.0 ypg), eighth in rushing (264.1 ypg) and 10th in scoring (38.3 ppg). South Florida went 10-2 (would've been 11-2 if they played the UConn game) that year including a win over Texas Tech in the Birmingham Bowl. At Texas, Gilbert's offense finished 16th nationally and second in the Big-12.

Prior to his stints at Texas and South Florida, Gilbert led Tulsa's offensive attack. Tulsa finished 13th in the nation in total offense and 11th in passing offense. They averaged over 37 points per game (21st in the country) that season. As the leader of the offense under Dino Babers at Bowling Green and Eastern Illinois, they had some of the best offenses at their level.

Oh and at EIU he coached a guy named Jimmy Garoppolo

His offense wasn't an issue as much as maybe bad defenses on the team or bad or young QB's during down years.

Sometimes you just gotta figure it out for yourself...

RE: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA - TexanMark - 01-12-2020 08:56 AM

Ocala we'll see. Right now it is just a media leak of his hiring from a McNeese St source. One thing I know: he can't be worse than our current OC. Ofcourse you guys probably said the same thing about hiring Bell.

Our new DC hire looks solid as a Rocky Long 3-3-5 disciple.

HUGE difference...and yes, being an OC with a top QB does help open up one's playbook but I was actually shocked (but happy of course) Kerwin that Bell was soooooooooooooooo bad this year

RE: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA - Foreverandever - 01-12-2020 11:10 AM

I think USF fans underestimate how badly Strong choked out his offensive coaches. His decision making and priorities on the field explain the continued offensive struggles he has had at both Texas and USF.

If Gilbert does well at Cuse then South Florida can only blame Strong. Gilbert will end up looking like a scapegoat.

LOL - if you think there's a USF fan out there who doesn't think Strong was the primary architect of our problems, you're sadly mistaken.

I think Mark will quickly grow tired of watching a halfback dive on first down

Yes, it'll be gussied up as an RPO, but the "P" or the "O" are never exercised.

Gilbert takes over a team that should have won the AAC and goes 10-2 (barely) with it.... all he had to do was not **** up Flowers and he would have won a title but instead he called the half back dive 400 times and cost us a title.

No, Charlie Strongs conservative nature did that.

usf was #2 in rushing in 2017 with 260 yds per conf game (Navy was obviously #1).

usf had over 650 yds in offense vs UCF on that divisional Black Friday "Championship" game but it was usf's defense and special teams lapses which is why UCF won that game.

I remember that game...so entertaining.

Both teams basically scored at will. I agree it was the defense that couldn't keep up.
