AJ Oliver - oduhoops71 - 12-15-2019 05:06 PM

This dude is just the spark this team needs. Outstanding first game against pretty good P5 school. This should open up some things on perimeter for X. Question is can our post play take advantage of more opportunities down low. I know a lot of people have lower expectations right now but I really think we are going to surprise folks in conference.

I'm on the AJ wagon. With X and Godwin we could have a few scorers on the floor at the same time. Just need the lightbulb to turn on.

RE: AJ Oliver - Prideofalion - 12-15-2019 05:48 PM

Talent is not the problem. I’m not saying we are loaded but we have the talent to win this conference. But everyone needs to buy in and be on the same page. Right now that’s not close to happening. It could happen though. Maybe Oliver can be the leader we need him to be. This team needs the intangible things and they need to find them quick.

RE: AJ Oliver - JJMonarch - 12-15-2019 06:30 PM

I am a fan already as well and I understand why Jeff was so upset about that stupid NCAA decision to hold him out 1st semester. Last night I was very happy to see Oliver, Godwin, and X on the floor at the same time. It sounds like a no brainer but I wasn’t convinced Jones would do that. I am with oduhoops71 in thinking we could still surprise some people. We do have enough talent on this team to win but it needs to come together.

RE: AJ Oliver - bigblue78 - 12-15-2019 06:49 PM

AJ has a sweet looking shot and his point production is sorely needed. But ODU has to stop the Incessant fouling. In the 7-game slide opponents have 171 FT attempts to 78 for ODU...too many points for ODU to make up. Plus our bigs are either on the bench or playing passive defense as the game progresses.

PG play is a concern for me as well. Statistically, Curry is adequate- he doesn't turn the ball over much and 3.4 assists/g is all right, but there is no direction or flow to the offense. Green is showing the pressure of having to try to score, defend and direct the offense against the opponents best defenders while his team mates struggle to even make layups.

This team needs more than just one additional scorer.

That’s silly. This guy coaches his butt off. It’s up to these young men to respond and as of yet it just hasn’t clicked. It will. You guys underestimate how hard it is to replace two studs. Not one but two. Two that represented more than half of your offensive production. We knew that would be a problem so now is not that time for the “fire the coach” nonsense.

Thank you oduhoops for your efforts in keeping this thread from turning into another , “fire the coach” thread. It seemed like last year every thread someone started turned that way. Getting back to Oliver, it’s pretty cool that he came to us via the connection Jones had with the parents. The Stiths and now Oliver. It speaks a lot to the impact he has had in the coaching world.

This guy has had a lot of "guys not responding" in 6+ years. It begins and ends with the coach. Good programs with good coaches build on successful seasons. They do not spend 5 years building to one good team, only to face another rebuilding process immediately thereafter.

Not like it doesnt happen other places. We’ve won 25 games in 4 out of 7 seasons and this is the forst true rebuilding season after inheriting nothing from Blaine.

What FBS FOOTBALL mid major school do you think the basketball program should try to emulate?

Because I can’t think of ONE midmajor basketball program (at a FBS school) that has a dominate basketball program and doesn’t have to rebuild.

RE: AJ Oliver - odu09 - 12-16-2019 07:22 AM

The guy scored 17 points in 20 minutes, but the thread becomes a debate about the coach.

Sometimes this place really sucks.

You can make the argument that Jeff Jones deserves some grace since the team is coming off an NCAA bid last year. However, these are his guys. JJ has to own every part of the coaching gig and not just the X's and O's. If his team isn't committed, it falls on him.

It all goes back to depth and recruiting. If someone graduates, why wasn't a backup being groomed to take their role? Leadership 101. I'm not in the "Fire Jeff Jones" bandwagon, but he is directly responsible for the poor start. Still plenty of time to turn it around.

Temple, Cincinnatti, Memphis? They are arguably "mid-major" but they are definitely in a G5 conference. Those would be the programs I think ODU should try to emulate in any case.

RE: AJ Oliver - T-Mac - 12-16-2019 10:03 AM

Leadership isn't something you can recruit. Leadership isn't something you can develop absent opportunity. ODU lost two great leaders last year. There is a huge void in that area this year. The coach can quickly replace the talent, but the leadership will need to develop through experience and opportunity.

RE: AJ Oliver - Gilesfan - 12-16-2019 10:03 AM

I would like us to be that good as well. All 3 of those schools have gone through rebuilding periods. Though, I don't think we should pay our players like Memphis is doing.

RE: AJ Oliver - Prideofalion - 12-16-2019 10:37 AM

Look at Richmond. On sports talk radio here they have a handful of callers who have been calling for Mooney’s head for the last 4 seasons. They’ve been absolute garbage. They fielded a damn high school team a couple years ago. Now it looks like the best team Mooney has ever had. It’s the same players, just older and more experienced. He didn’t forget how to coach or recruit. **** happens, players get kicked off or transfer or injured. They have had a lot of turnover. Now they’ve got a veteran looking group who have played together for 2 or 3 years and this is what happens.

RE: AJ Oliver - FearTheLion - 12-16-2019 10:49 AM

In only several months after someone paid for a prominent billboard ad to drum up support for firing him. Amazing how many predictions age. And this board had a ton of them before our squad got us back to the tournament last year.

RE: AJ Oliver - mac - 12-16-2019 11:11 AM

I wish AJ the very best. He sounds promising based off all of game #1!

We still need a center to step forward. We have one that is a junior now. Time to play like a junior big guy, time's running short. I really hadn't seen coming that our best two bigger guys would take a step back this year .... so far.

Still need consistent point guard play too. One's a freshman, so he needs time. Might not happen this year.

So, AJ will help but we need more from others too. Not holding out much hope for this next game. 8 game losing streak, didn't see that coming either back when we were beating St. Joe's and NE.

Oh well, he life of a Monarch fan. Three wins all time in the NCAA's even with all the fine players like Sessoms, Hodge, West and Gattison et al of the past.
