Memphis wins AAC, headed to Cotton Bowl - HarborPointe - 12-07-2019 07:30 PM

But their head coach is leaving, so I guess they regret hiring him, huh?

I bet they are so upset that they just refuse to go to the Cotton Bowl. Who could go on after such a crushing turn of events?

I hear they’re declining and going to Hawaii as a real reward for the players. Their short list consists of Tommy West.

They probably want someone who will just stay at Memphis forever.

I liked the energy Fedora brought to the football program, but that decision to go to the Hawaii Bowl really pissed me off. We could have played a 9-3 Penn State team in Dallas and really put an exclamation mark on the season with a win. Instead Houston enthusiastically took on the challenge and defeated Penn State convincingly. I have wondered if part of Fedora's real reasoning for picking Hawaii was because he quietly had doubts the team would be capable of winning against Penn State- and he wanted to be sure the team finished the year with a win.

What would be funny is if this year's team also went to the Hawaii Bowl. I guess that would be a real reward for finishing 3rd place in the division. Not 3rd place in the conference...3rd place in the division.

The simpler explanation is the game in Hawaii was something like 8 days earlier, allowing Fedora to coach the bowl game and still get settled in Chapel Hill by New Year’s.

Fedora already had a contract worth roughly $14 million dollars in his pocket. What would it matter to him if we’d lost to Penn State?

I think he really was thinking of the guys on the team. How many of them are ever going back to Hawaii vs how many could get to Dallas on their own if they ever wanted.

He wanted to get to UNC asap, period. Was easy to spin it....and nice to take the fam on vacation before the big move and payday. It was a terrible, horse **** decision that the AD allowed and never should have allowed. They put themselves ahead of the betterment of the University and football program. One of the worst decisions ever. Of course they (Usm powers that be in general) outdid themselves with the EJ hire right after. Pathetic.

“Allowed” probably isn’t the right word. I’m sure the admins wanted the Hawaii vacation, too.

There’s the rub. Hiring Johnson made it immaterial anyway. We could’ve beaten Penn State by 50 in front of 25,000 USM fans in Dallas, and we’d still be right the fudge where we are today. On the flip side, had we hired somebody who’d kept things rolling, it’d be all but forgotten by now as we’d be on to better things.
