Will Hopson remains the coach at Southern Miss? - EagNBran - 11-30-2019 07:59 PM

Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts. I know $500k buyout is nothing to scoff at, but I’m not sure we can afford to keep him if attendance remains around 10k. That’s A LOT of lost money.

If im the AD, i wouldn't want to leave my legacy up to a guy i didn't hire and has 7 wins after year four in a terrible conference. Its not like he inherited a losing squad. He inherited a 9 win team with an Nfl Qb and Rb. Hop has had mpre than a fair chance. Time to say thank you, but good bye. At least we saved some money with his cheap salary. Should be in better shape to pay someone more. If the win total doesn't get him, the low attendance and quitting last game should ( kicking that fg instead of going for td from the 2).

RE: Will Hopson remains the coach at Southern Miss? - Feral Eagle - 11-30-2019 08:18 PM

I hope he won't remain the coach, but I believe that he will. I don't see him being fired, and making the payout.

One situation that might change it is if USM doesn't appear in a bowl game. If the info I've seen is right, C-USA has 5 guaranteed bowl slots for 2019. As it stands now you have the East Division with FAU (9-4), Marshall (8-4), and WKU (8-4). In the West Division you have LaTech (either 9-3 or 8-4), UAB (9-3).......and Southern Miss (7-5). Does anyone see Southern Miss claiming one of the guaranteed bowl slots? If we don't get into one of the other bowls because another conference doesn't fill it's slot, USM will be sitting home. Suddenly that 7-5 "winning record" doesn't seem so great when the team isn't invited to a bowl.

We’ll get a bowl. No worry on that end.

Not one of the guaranteed ones. We'll have to back into one.

A broke dick bowl against a WAC school that will drum us.

From the look of things the past few weeks, I’m not sure Hopson hasn’t already planned his own exit.

One can...wait for it...hope.

Wasn't it the start of last season when Hopson had his contract extended? Is his buyout really just $500k after this season?

This team was better than 7 wins.

Our attendance average was 24,765, up 3k from last season. We probably averaged 17k actual people at the games. Tickets were almost free if you just waited the week prior to the game to purchase. Concessions were lower cost. We had to have lost money in ticket + concessions revenue compared to last season.

If we lose our bowl game, I expect Hopson to be fired.

Perhaps the most disturbing and telling issue of all is that the current recruiting class is ranked 11th in the conference. He is ******* from right here in Mississippi and has perhaps the worst recruiting class we have ever had. His recruiting classes should be getting better not worse. That is reason enough to fire him. He was suppose to get the best classes ever since hes from Vicksburg and Mississippi through and through. Jeremy needs to fire him and make a great hire. If anyone can defend his fall in recruiting, please do. Id love to hear it. Just dont come with this, "star rankings don't mean anything", bull****.

Also, let us not forget him calling out the President of the University and disobeying the Acting AD with the Briles fiasco.

Dude is toast.....I dont see him escaping it. Prob hear something Sunday or Monday.

Time to move forward..... The trojan horse is riding.

He'll be retained but I think we go 5-7 next year which will end his career here.

RE: Will Hopson remains the coach at Southern Miss? - EagNBran - 12-01-2019 08:59 AM

If you look at his recruiting, Reg, you’d be shocked at how many players we sign that we’re their only D1 offer. Hopson takes the Bower approach of offering everyone, but only trying on people he knows he won’t have to fight for.

if you're going to fire him, today is the day....

anything downstream is limiting relative to available candidates.....

one would think the dipshites learned that lesson after allowing fedhat to continue through the how-R-ya bowl...that yielded E12L....

then Monk throws us a curve ball at the last minute that yielded hop-A-long....

Oh crap! I was mistaken and looked it up again. Jon Gilbert graciously extended his contract until January of 2022. So effectively he's still under contract for the next TWO seasons. That makes it even less likely that he will be fired this year. I can't see the athletic department taking on the burden of paying off 1 million in compensation to him. I even question if they would do it at 500k.

I think it's looking like there are 80 eligible teams for 80 spots. But, even if there were more teams eligible than spots, new NCAA rules state you have to take a 7 win team before you can take a 6 win team. This goes even before bowl contractual obligations. So we are guaranteed a bowl.

Replaces a couple of position coaches, defensive backs for one. Starts Tate in the bowl and wins. Names him the starter next year and we dominate. Mr. Potato Head is fired. Academic leadership and faculty are reformed. We turn over the H'burg campus to HUD and accept econ dev incentives to phase into a pristine new campus on the coast. New everything including professional schools and athletic facilities. The TTT cheer is banished, the band starts playing Dixie again and pre-game prayer returns. Have to choose between two invitations a better athletic conference.

RE: Will Hopson remains the coach at Southern Miss? - EagNBran - 12-01-2019 03:50 PM

Most of that will never occur.

I do agree, though, that if we want to see actual success in any Athletics, we need a President who actually cares about it. We don’t have that.

We got rid of Ellis at $2.1 million. One road game takes care of that. It should have been announced already.

Right, but that was driven by a 0-12 season that followed a 12-2 season. Different motivating factors at the moment.

Those 10k in the stands of a potential division-clenching game should be a huge motivation.
