WBB Games 5 & 6: ShareSLO Beach Holiday Classic - Aviewfromthestands2 - 11-28-2019 02:53 PM

This Friday the ODU Monarchs will partake in the 13th annual ShareSLO Beach Holiday Classic. The Monarchs will play the first game against the home team, the California Polytechnic State University Mustangs at the Motts Athletic Center in San Luis Obispo, California. San Luis Obispo is Spanish for St Louis, the Bishop. It's located between San Jose and Los Angeles. (Some of the locals might call it SLOtown) Oprah Winfrey once refereed to San Luis Obispo as the "happiest city in America".

Cal Poly is from the Big West conference and their head coach is Faith Mimnaugh. Coach Faith is entering her 23rd year of the helm of the program. Before that, she served as assistant coach for the legendary Kay Yow. And for three seasons she was the head coach at the University of Evansville. As a player, she played for Loyola Chicago. In her senior year, the PG had 316 assists. That average of 11.7 apg remains the second best in division one history.

Cal Poly is 1-4 this season. They are 1-1 at home. RPI: 332 SOS Rank: 325.

Vs Fresno State 79-52 L Record: 3-2 RPI: 156
@ Pepperdine 53-63 L Record: 2-2 RPI: 164
@ Denver 66-96 L Record: 2-2 RPI: 301
Vs Sacramento 62-43 W Record: 0-3 RPI: 347
@ Arizona St 41-66 L Record: 3-1 RPI: 177
Vs ODU Record: 3-1 RPI: 259

This game will mark the first time we have ever played Cal Poly.

Mustangs Starting Five

23- Alicia Roufosee F 6'3" Sr 4.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 0.6 apg, 41.2 FG%, 0.00 3P%, 70.0 FT%, 17.0 mpg
52- Sierra Campisano F 6'3" Rd JR 16.2 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 0.8 apg, 42.4 FG%, 0.00 3P%, 78.1 FT%, 32.2 mpg
01- Abbey Ellis G 5'5" Fr 15.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.4 apg, 38.8 FG%, 25.9 3P%, 94.1 FT%, 33.3 mpg
03- Lily Svetich G 5'9" Fr 0.7 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 0.0 apg, 50.0 FG%, 0.00 3P%, 0.00 FT%, 11.4 mpg
05- Malia Holt G 5'6" Jr 3.0 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 1.2 apg, 33.3 FG%, 33.3 3P%, 33.3 FT%, 24.8 mpg

Top Bench
22- Hannah Peterson SG 5'10" Jr 3.2 ppg, 3.2 apg, 1.6 apg, 53.8 FG%, 40.0 3P%, 0.00 FT%, 20.2 mpg
25- Kirsty Brown F 6'3" Jr 2.3 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 0.6 apg, 37.5 FG%, 0.00 3P%, 50.0 FT%, 16.2 mpg

When you look at the offense, the player that stands out is Sierra Campisano. She has had 3 double doubles this season and so far most of the offense has had to run around her. The Mustangs have been without Hana Vesela for the last three games. (I'm not sure why....injury?) Vesela was the team's leading scorer last season averaging 11.2 ppg and this season averaged 12.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg. She is a key part of her offense. Freshman PG Abbey Ellis (from Australia) has stepped up in her absence though. She is money at the FT line (one miss FT on the year) and it's the team's biggest threat from the 3P line. They have some height in the front line (6'3" is tall). But it's a team that has been plagued with turnovers and is still developing it's offense.

This should be a fun game for ODU. Yes it's going to be tough playing against the home team. But it should be a nice bounce game after UVA. And rest assured this will be a good tune up for the main game in this series. Idaho.

The Monarchs will now play the University of Idaho Vandals on the second game of the tournament. The university of Idaho is located in Moscow, Idaho. It is the oldest public university in the state and the biggest. The main campus has 1,585 acres of land. Needless to say, they do a lot of farming related programs in that area. (For example, agribusiness is a major at this school. I don't think ODU will ever offer that)

The Vandals went 22-10 last season, from the Big Sky conference. They made it to the third round of the women's WNIT last year. This season they are 3-1. RPI of 84 and SOS of 195.

20- Kirby, Allison G 5'7" Jr 3.0 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 1.3 apg, 60.0 FG%, 50.0 3P%, 80.0 FT%, 19.3 mpg

Yes Lizzy and Natalie Klinker are sisters. When it comes to scouting this team, the first thing that you will probably read is that they like to shoot the ball from downtown. And that is true. They rank in the top 30 in the NCAA in three point made per game and 45.2% of the team's overall shots are from beyond the arc. But a lot of the team's three point scoring comes from their PG, Gina Marxen who averages 3.75 three's a game. Good enough for 13th in the nation. In fact Marxen is the player who makes this team go. She creates (leads team in assist per game) and scores. While most of the team can shot the three, the rest of them tend to play under the basket. (Except 5'9" freshman guard Caitlyn Jones from Australia, she shoots everything from beyond the arc) It's a better team solid fundamentals. Credit that to head coach Jon Newlee, who is entering his 11th year and is Idaho's all time leader in wins. Freshman Beyonce Bea has shown the ability to be a force on both sides of the ball. She is the team's second leading scorer and leading rebounder as a true freshman.

When you look at the stats, they are really close in a lot of categories. ODU does have more steals on defense.

The Vandals were predicted to come in second place in the Big Sky conference. This game can make a difference in our RPI. And I wish that this game was on tv or that I could see it live. I really think that this game could turn into a battle of three's. In that case, it will come down to defense and shot selection. In ODU's win against Cal Poly, Hudson went 2-for-4, Morris went 3-for-7, and Adams went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. That should boost some confidence for our team

This one should be a lot of fun to listen to. Go ODU!

-----------

Updated

I write a lot of these write-ups in advance. Lamar University has just beaten 47-44. Idaho had an uncharacteristic 25 turnovers in that game. Over half the team's shots were from beyond the arc. Which goes with that age old saying, "live by the three, die by the three".

It will still be a good game for ODU to play.

@ODUWBB: After the second game of the day between Cal Poly & Lamar, ODU was the only team to finish 2-0 in the ShareSLO Holiday Beach Classic, crowning them outright Tournament Champions!

ODU is up to #56 in RPI.

Four other CUSA teams are currently in top 100: WKU (46), MTSU (52), USM (64), Charlotte (100).

Yeah that UVa game was there for taking, and I truly believe we win that game 2 out of 3.

The CUSA WBB is looking pretty good, but where is Rice. Thought they would be in for another good year, RPI is +225 and the teams they beat have a combined record of 3-19.
