OT - Look who's winning in post-season football this year - Almadenmike - 11-25-2019 04:12 PM

DB!!

In the first round of the Division II playoffs

Dave Campbell's Texas Football Wrote:No. 21 Texas A&M-Commerce continued its recent history of playoff success as they pulled off a stunning 23-16 win over No. 3 Tarleton in the first round.

Bailiff is in his first season as head coach of the Lions ... (who) continued a winning tradition as they have advanced to the second round of the NCAA playoffs for the fourth consecutive season.

The win means that next Saturday, TAMC will travel to meet a D-II power that shares a very important alum with Rice ... the #7 ranked, undefeated (12-0) Colorado School of Mines Orediggers, who needed a last-second field goal to eek out their first-round win over the University of Sioux Falls.

He coached his team to a #21 ranking?

he coached them to an upset win over #3?

What is this world coming to?

Looks like their answer to their AnybodyBut... dilemma was ...Bailiff?

Well, TAMC did start the season at #13. :-)

But for making the adjustments to defeat their in-conference rival that had beaten the Lions by 14 a month earlier, I have no explanation. Unless the Tarleton players were over-confident.

I mean he’s also at a school where he can take a disgraced QB Rice had to kick out.

He could take those kids at Texas State too. It’s just a little different.

Probably didn't involve kneeling to get to overtime. Although I don't find that particular incident to be his worst coaching move, by far.

It’s pretty hard to get kicked out of a university. Take a look around the cfb and see what it takes to more than “suspend from team activities”.

Bailff is a good coach. He took Rice to three straight bowls and a conference championship. No one else has done that. His success at A&M Commerce only underscores how difficult it is to win at Rice, particularly given it's conference affiliation.

He's a good coach in the right context. He "got Rice" except he didn't understand how to win consistently at Rice. Rice needs somebody who can take his'uns and beat your'uns, or take your'uns and beat his'uns. David can take his'uns and beat your'uns--as long as his'uns are better. He has to out-recruit you to beat you. He can hit with that--or miss badly with that. But at a place like Rice, with more recruiting restrictions than most places, he can't sustain with that.

I don't know whether Bloomgren can do it or not--and it is pretty uncomfortable not knowing after two years. But we can all hope that what we are now seeing is progress.

What I find odd is that we had a defense-oriented coach in Bailiff and his defenses were dreadful. We replaced him with an offense-oriented coach in Bloomgren, and the defense has improved mightily but the offense is dreadful.

It's become pretty clear over the last few years that coordinators - and how much they're paid - have as much to do with it as the head coach.

Whatever. Bailiff is our EX-coach. I wish him well, same as for Hatfield. He did his best, represented us well, left with dignity. Now it is the Bloomgren era. Time for all the Hate-Bailiff stuff to go away.

When he was still our coach, all the BS flying around made me sick. Now we have moved on, no reason to keep beating the dead horse. We have a new coach to evaluate. New seasons to enjoy/endure. New futures to discuss.

Yes, I get along well with my ex-wife, too. Doesn't mean I want to remarry her.

I've been arguing this for a decade or more

You obviously have important inside information. Please share, since you've called the kid out.

Bailiff's troops won again today, this time 23-3 at Colorado School of Mines.

Minnesota State up next.

After spotting the Orediggers the first 3 points, DB's Lions scored the rest of the game's points in the final three quarters (and 1Q's final second), including a fake field goal TD pass.

Ryan Scott/Commerce Journal Wrote:The game was played in near-freezing temperatures with constant winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour. Wind gusts up to 80 mph were forecasted. Dozens of workers cleared out Marv Kay Stadium of more than two feet of snow earlier in the week, and a further two inches were cleared out the night before the game.

Golden is a good place and Mines is a good academic school.

If you're looking for some fun December reading, here's info about TAMU Commerce's (and DB's) first game vs. the Seleccion Nuevo Leon lions:

Box Score

Summary

TAMU won 83-0 while holding the Lions to -83 yards and 0 first downs. They actually shortened the last 3 quarters to 10 minutes after the talent disparity became clear.

Congratulations to Coach Bailiff for a great year. Maybe he finally found a home where he will be successful.
