At this stage a D3 opponent does not help us reach our goal. Winning is obvious and looking good while winning is important. Too bad we have this game after Davidson. Unlike JWU, maybe we can show our defensive improvement by holding them to a respectable score.

NC Wesleyan has averaged 62.0 points per game thus far this season against three D-III opponents.

I'm not sure how much we can learn about our defense in light of that.

Well, if we give up more than that.................................. a lot

RE: NC Wesleyan (Tuesday, 7 PM) - 82hawk - 11-18-2019 09:03 AM

If I were McGrath, I would have one and only one goal. Hold this team to under 50 points. Period.

If we put up 100+ that won't mean a whole lot but either way it's pretty irrelevant. I hate non D-I games at this stage in the season...

RE: NC Wesleyan (Tuesday, 7 PM) - solohawks - 11-18-2019 09:27 AM

If we want to play a non D1 we can schedule one as an exhibition.

This game is just a waste of time

Don't know about the deal with JWU. But NC Wesleyan and Emory and Henry are part of the tournament in DC. Games like these have been forced on mid-majors since the year we went to Texas. I'm pretty sure Brownell was our coach then. So basically, if we want to play in some kind of a tourney each year, we may have to agree to such terms.

Agree. But the game will be played. Question is, what does McGrath want to gain besides the W? Based on our last two years and the beating we took against Davidson, why not focus completely and entirely on shutting this team down? Smother them on defense. Create turnovers and get steals. Forget about offense. Like you said, who cares if we score 100? But, what if he showed something entirely different and we pressed the entire game? What if his whole scheme was to sell out on defense? Get his guys fired up deflecting passes and contesting every drive and shot. Celebrating every dive on the floor and held ball? How fun would that be to watch. But, it's just a dream I know.

Coach McGrath is not a complete idiot.

Obviously what he has been doing - the defensive schemes inculcated into him under Roy Williams - just don't work with the players he has. Heretofore, it seems,he has believed that the problem has been the players' willingness or ability to execute those schemes. And to be fair, that was an open question. But now he has new players, more length, more athleticism and we are still getting lit up by everybody from Davidson to the Chefs.

In the crime fighting business, that's' what they call a "clue".

Surely, if only in the interest of saving his head coaching career, he has to be thinking that if he doesn't make systemic adjustments he will be looking for houses in Benny Mossville.

Kinda' painted himself in a corner, didn't he? Now that all the players who "never bought into his system" are gone, it's on him, right?

Shykeim is in the starting lineup tonight.

Toews, Phillips, Okauru, Estime’ and Linssen

I’ve had it with Skaggs completely. I’ll be annoyed at this point if he even sees the court during conference play.

82, you were saying that coach’s goal should be to hold them to 50 pts or less. They allowed 53. FG percentage was 35.5% and a shocking 0% from three.

I followed along sparingly on Gamecast. Anyone that actually saw the game... was that 3 pt defense better or was this team missing open shots?

Didn't watch the game, so have no idea if they were bad or if we defended well. I can't take away anything against a D3 team. Glad to see they scored under 53 regardless.

Agree on take aways in games like this. Heard we pressed a bit too.

RE: NC Wesleyan (Tuesday, 7 PM) - billthebighawksfan - 11-19-2019 09:11 PM

Hawks did press a little bit and it was effective in the 2nd half when I was watching . Defense overall could stand some more improvement. Hawks have a few guys that can guard, but not all of them.

It was good to see Brian Tolafree play pretty aggressive defense tonight.

RE: NC Wesleyan (Tuesday, 7 PM) - 82hawk - 11-19-2019 09:19 PM

I can't see Boggs as a back up player. He has skills, height and is a smart player. We need that on the court as much as possible.
