Defense first coaching hire - 82hawk - 11-18-2019 08:14 AM

One thing should be crystal clear by now. Our next coach should have experience as an assistant from a defense first basketball program.

The two times UNCW has experienced success in our men's basketball program, defense was the first priority. Wainright/Brownell and Keatts both focused on defense first and then found ways to score. College of Charleston hired a defense first coach in Earl Grant and experienced immediate success. Charlotte hired Ron Sanchez, who was an assitant to the Bennett family of coaches at UVA and Washington State, and they are having success immediately.

We simply cannot afford these decades of failure by making the wrong hire. Basketball is our premiere sport, and the success of our program has far reaching effects, either positive or negative, on all our athletic programs as well as recruitng for students who apply to UNCW.

If you have any connections to UNCW, you should make your voice heard on this issue.

Good THREAD start 82hawk. I won't change my mind on this topic even if we win some games.

We keep lurching back and forth on our style of play and our emphasis. We will never build a PROGRAM if we don't have continuity in our coaching hires. There are several programs and coaches who produce assistants in this mold. We need to stick to them when success comes and we lose our coach(which is a matter of when, not if). Watching Charlotte take down Davidson and then Wake Forest shold be a wake up calll. UNCW hasn't won back to back games of that stature in a long time, if ever.

Mark Byington flirted with the Elon job last offseason. Maybe coming back to his alma mater would entice him. Would he fit the criteria of what you're looking for?

You guys know my feeling, but even i think it's a bit counterproductive talking about it at this point.

We went from having success with Keatts style to a UNC hire. Makes no sense. That's on Bass. We have a PG that can push the ball and distribute. We have athletes but WHO are our actual 'knock down' shooters that can play defense? Estime. Maybe Okauru once he gets comfortable with regular minutes and finds his confidence? Toews and Phillips can do lots of damage getting the defense to collapse but we need to spread the floor with shooters if we are playing 4 out 1 in. CB has his guys but did they recruit the right players with the right skill set to execute whatever his master plan is? Back to your original point, I still don't know what kind of style UNCW is trying to play. Nobody can explain this. Someone, at some point, must have asked CB this question in a public forum but I have yet to hear the answer.

Agree. Simple as that.

Defense is a foundational necessity in this league, and for mid majors as a whole, IMO.
