If we give out scholarships, it could be a good way to meet Title 9 compliance without spending much in infrastructure.

That's the plan I'm thinking, granted this can be guys and girls. plus the players can get any prize money from the tournaments and it can pay pretty well. There's grown ppl that do it for a living.

Unfortunately, it does not affect the Title 9 balance for our NCAA-sponsored sports.

Just what we need... more people sitting around and playing video games all day. This is definitely the stupidest thing I've heard all day.

I agree. Is it something that I personally will follow? No. However, I won't scoff at a program that provide scholarships AND, in the national landscape, there are significant professional $$$ opportunities after college. Top tournaments currently have payouts (per person) ranging from $2-12 million.

Yeah like I'm never gonna be mad at someone for doing something they enjoy and getting paid. Its not like this is their degree. I got a music degree at ODU but I ended up getting a degree in cyber security so I'm just big into tech in general

I have a family member who is an adult gamer on eNascar and iracing. They had a $100k race last month. It's crazy they have sponsorships and even Nascar owner's Dale Jr., Joe Gibbs and Tony Stewart are hiring gamers to erace.

Yeah there's some serious money be made. People get sponsored and everything. It's pretty cool.

My cousin has a large following on YouTube. He said when he live streams he gets something called super chats, people just give him money for entertainment value. It's a whole nother world I'm not familiar with.

Also ODU had 2 players drafted to the NBA 2k league. So to those say we don't need it, clearly there is money in it so why not offer a program to students. https://www.odu.edu/news/2018/5/_nba2k_gamers_league#.Xca4ZiV7mRs

Gotta admit I don't know the first thing about this. I guess if the young people like it then go for it. I do however worry about what seems like a trend in our culture to more and more slip out of reality and substitue fantasy for genuine experience. I suspect things like esports, video games, social media all combine to put a dent in actual attendance at games and getting personally involved.

I am a boomer and grateful I had saturday afternoons playing touch football in peoples back yards.

RE: ODU Adds Varsity eSports in 2020 - odu09 - 11-09-2019 11:19 AM

It's a billion dollar industry. ODU is the first D1 program to do it in the state, that's something we should be proud of. If you don't get it, that's fine. But don't crap on something you know 0 about.

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/20/heres-why-esports-can-become-a-billion-dollar-industry-in-2019.html

For a bit more context, one of the games "League of Legends" world finals hit 100 million viewers. The world series draws 40 million. If you don't see the value on getting in on the action, I don't know what to tell you.

Expressing a different point of view is not "crapping" on something. One thing I've learned is 2 different points of view can both be correct and each has value.

I did not quote you, so I was not responding to you. There are several people here doing more than expressing a different point of view.
