RE: Sun Belt Conference & G5 Podcasts - USM3000 - 08-15-2022 10:24 AM

Here's my Monday gripe about G5 podcast (not talking about a particular team podcast, but ones that focus on G5 in general). After catching up on a few podcast over the weekend, I feel dumber for having subjected myself to listening to them.

* Again, not podcast about particular schools, this gripe is directed only at some pods that "specialize" in G5 schools or the "Underdogs" in college athletics.*

I find it offensive when a podcast that's dedicated to G5 conferences start off a podcast by belittling a conference for splitting media days into 2 days and saying things like "your not the SEC, why 2 days?" and implying that it was boring. No, wait, actually calling it outright boring. To call yourself a podcast ABOUT "underdogs" or "G5's" and then compare them to the Cartel Conferences shows that they do not know their target audience AT ALL.

The next problem is when the podcast hosts don't even know basic info about the teams in the conference. I listened to one that thought the Sun Belt add 3 teams, another one thought that Old Dominion was an independent. The funny thing is that this particular podcast has covered C-USA heavily for YEARS. You would think that they would know O.D. came from there....

I understand that these guys can't know every detail about every team (or conference for that matter) but most of the ones I listen too seem to jump to running their mouths without doing even BASIC research. It like they decide to just riff off the top of their head without any preparation, no insight, no passion except for the big money conferences ( WHO'S FANS DON'T LISTEN TO YOUR G5 PODCAST BECAUSE THYE COULDN'T CARE LESS ABOUT US!!!), and being know as a "sports writer".

When these Yahoos actually do discuss the teams from the conference (and not personal, non-related tidbits about their personal life or past drinking/partying exploits), they seem to regurgitate the same old "Low Information Voter" opinions that they've heard elsewhere. They have strong opinions about who'll win this division or who might challenge for runner up, but give NO REASONING behind these opinions. Just a blanket : "XYZ will probably win this side, ABC might give them a run for their money, and QRX will no doubt win the other side" .... with no elaboration.
It's like they read cliff notes about the conference 6 months ago and only remember absolutely nothing about the conference.

In summary, G5 podcasters should:
Know their audience. (hint: it's not fans of $$$ schools or other sports writers who cover the Cartel Schools)
Find out some basic info about the conference your discussing.
If you want to make a prediction, back it up with some reasoning or explain how you came to that decision. Elaborate.

Rant over. Carry on

Good rant, and spot on. I listened to this same UD podcast. I have listened to them before, but these two guys -- who seemed to be pick ups to cover the SBC (which has historically not been a focus for UD), I was not impressed with their basic knowledge, nor their questions/comments. They may improve, but they have a way to go.

Accurate rant. Underdog Dynasty has been ass since its inception and the biggest reason is because they'll literally "hire" anyone with a pulse.

I've said before, and I'll say again, the Belt has the best dedicated podcasts in the G5 leagues. I've listened to them all.

-Southern Miss has two really good pods, but we really like TTT.
-App St has two good ones, but we prefer Black & Gold.
-ODU just started up the Monarchists Pod which is very informative and they get great access to coaches and players.
-Marshall has few good ones, but we are biased toward our buddy KD.
-Georgia St has a few good ones (a new one just cropped up last week) and it's good to see their team get some real coverage in the A.
-Covid Carolina sucks at everything including podcasting
-We like to think we do our homework and put out a good product at Ragin Review

Strongly encourage everyone to check out all of the team pods in the belt.

By the way, half of the time we had Steele on, we talked about the SBC. East and West.

I don't typically post our weekly episodes here since we're very GSU narrow-minded but we interviewed the guys from The Monarchists last night and I thought there may be some interest in that part with fans of other teams. Give Part 2 a listen and if ya like it check out Part 1.
