Most impressive G5 over P5 win - Fighting Muskie - 10-10-2019 12:13 PM

So far there have been 20 G5 over P5 wins (and one FCS over P5 win).

Which ones do you think were the most impressive?

Personally I think Hawaii over 4-1 Arizona and Wyoming over 4-1 Missouri were pretty nice

RE: Most impressive G5 over P5 win - CliftonAve - 10-10-2019 12:31 PM

SMU over TCU

None of the ranked P5 teams have lost to a G5 team this season.

The two you mention are the best.

UCF over Stanford for most dominating performance.

SMU over TCU for best win.

To be fair, those teams aren't currently ranked BECAUSE they lost to a G5. They're repulsed by that notion.

Voters will forgive 4-1 Arizona State's loss to 3-2 Colorado.
Voters will forgive 4-1 Utah's loss to 3-2 USC.
Voters will never forgive 4-1 Arizona's loss to 4-1 Hawai'i.

If you're looking at wins over P5 teams who were ranked at the time, SMU beat #25 TCU. And Temple beat #21 Maryland.

RE: Most impressive G5 over P5 win - IWokeUpLikeThis - 10-10-2019 01:00 PM

Temple has 2 P5 wins, including a dominant 24-2 scalp over its former coach. Their coach is now 5-2 vs the Big Ten, with a 24-17 loss to #1 Ohio St.

RE: Most impressive G5 over P5 win - MWC Tex - 10-10-2019 01:06 PM

While there some good ones.

So far I think it’s San Jose St win over Arkansas.

The fact that over half of the coaches with votes in the coaches' poll are G5 coaches undermines your argument. You would have to be arguing that G5 coaches are incorrigibly biased against G5 teams.

The best argument against ranking Arizona is that they haven't looked that good against anyone else. They only beat a terrible UCLA team because UCLA's kicker missed a thirtysomething yard FG attempt on the last play. Other arguments: Utah just looks like a better team. ASU might only be marginally better but has better wins than UA.

TCU was ranked when they lost to SMU. That counts.

No, it doesn't argue against what I said.

I'm not saying that it's illogical. I'm saying that it exists.

Every single 1-loss P5 team except Missouri and Arizona is ranked. It's because they lost to G5 schools.

If Missouri was 4-1 with a blowout loss to Clemson, they'd be ranked today. Instead, they're 4-1 with a loss to Wyoming. That loss to Wyoming is what keeps them unranked.

RE: Most impressive G5 over P5 win - quo vadis - 10-10-2019 02:01 PM

I have seen some mention the wins over Arizona, TCU, and Missouri.

As of now, the Massey Composite ranks them thusly:

Missouri .......... 18

Arizona ........... 37

TCU ................ 44

So, the OP appears to be correct, Wyoming over Mizzou and Hawaii over Arizona.

That said, this discussion highlights what a weak year its been for the G5 versus P5. There just aren't any really impressive P5 hides that have been tanned by G5 this year.

OK, so you are arguing that G5 coaches mark teams down for losing to G5 teams.

Clemson isn't just any P5 team! Giving a team "credit" for losing to Clemson is arguably overdone, but it's not the same as giving a team credit for a loss to Maryland or Kansas, which, AFAIK, is not being done by the voters.

What had TCU done to deserve to be ranked? They had zero quality wins at the time of the ranking.

To evaluate whether it is a quality win, you have to look at the totality of the season.

Right now, I would put Hawaii over Arizona, Wyoming over Missouri and Temple over Maryland as the top wins.

And that can change in a Saturday - if Florida State were to beat Clemson, wouldn't that make Boise's win more impressive?

I’d beg to differ. 20 losses is quite a few and I think it demonstrates that it’s been a great year for the G5, particularly the AAC And MWC. The SBC hasn’t been too shabby. I can’t recall a season where they claimed 3 P5 scalps so it’s been a high water mark for them.

The lack of top 25 is self fulfilling—you can’t lose to a G5 and be in the top 25. additionally, most national title contenders are going to avoid facing a known dangerous G5 team.

I get the self-fulfilling aspect. Nevertheless, can you think of a year when the best G5 over P5 win was as weak as the two the OP mentioned?

I agree its been a great year by volume, but not nearly so much by quality.

20 wins by G5 teams but how many losses? 40? 50? 60?

A conference-by-conference breakdown would be nice.

A great year for the G5 would be one in which they have a playoff participant. Otherwise this is nothing but a circlejerk.

It’s still early yet to fully ascertain quality until more games get played. If Missouri or Arizona go on to run the table then those victories start looking really really good. Even if one of them goes 9-3 that’s still pretty nice. I wouldn’t be surprised in 9 or 10 of those teams who lost to a G5 ends up going bowling.

RE: Most impressive G5 over P5 win - bill dazzle - 10-10-2019 08:00 PM

Nebraska 35
South Alabama 21

Not a G5 win over a P5 member BUT ... as horrendous as USA is (and I write that with all due respect) and as "good" as the Huskers were supposed to be going into the season ... a stunner.

If Scott Frost is gone in a few years following multiple seasons of mediocrity, we might look back and describe the USA game as a "defining moment," among others, that explained why Husker football will never come remotely close to its excellence in the 1990s.

And you have to have Georgia State over Tennessee on any list of this type.
