Tulane defeats Houston - cincybb51 - 09-19-2019 10:27 PM

Tulane overcomes being down by 21 to win 38-31. Amazing finish Tulane goes 71 yards in 18 seconds on two plays. Probably for our strength of schedule we would preferred Houston to win since we don't play Tulane. But I enjoyed seeing Houston take the loss.

I am so not worried about Houston so long as Holgs is there...

Overpay for a coach on the way down, it is very Tubervillian.

Welcome to the Holgerson Era of Houston FB!

I was pretty high on Tulane coming into the season, and most everyone seemed to have written them off. Willie Fritz is a good coach, and is building a program there.

Did everyone right them off? They were 5 point favorites last night. I had them second in the west this year. Pretty sure I wasn't alone. I've seen a lot of positive on Tulane.

Houston was so tired in the 2nd half. Tulane was running 10+ yards a play. The kneel down play was perfect and then 3 Houston DBs missed the WR on the touchdown and he went right through them all. Really was an entertaining 4th quarter.

It's still only year 1 under Holgerson, so I'll hold off on my "told you so" comments for now... but in my opinion, anyone who figured that Holgerson would dominate the AAC at Houston buys way too much into the P5 hype.

A stronger Tulane certainly helps the American. Regarding Houston, I had penciled that in as a Bearcat loss pre-season. Now I'm not so sure. I think UC's performance @ Marshall will be more predictive of how the tougher AAC road games turn out.

Yeah, funny enough I think of West Virginia and Texas Tech as twin universities as institutions and fanbases. (other than basketball, where WVU has a much better program)

#6 on Houston could have at least tried to tackle dude . He was right on him.

I thought the same thing - he just gave up.

RE: Tulane defeats Houston - bearcatmark - 09-20-2019 08:41 AM

Houston was abysmal of defense last year despite having one of the best defensive lineman in the country. That wasn't changing overnight. I don't see Dana as a tubs type hire.

I'm very happy for the Tulane program and Coach Fritz. For many of us lamenting the mid to bottom feeders in our conference, Tulane is quietly becoming a solid program. That helps our overall conference strength and perception. Who'd thunk that it may be better that we're playing Houston this year rather than Tulane...

Holgs ceiling is 7-9 wins a year. I still remember the 2011 season in the Big East were he fortuitously took WVU to the BCS Bowl. WVU finished 5-2 in the Big East, but was a Zach Collaros broken ankle away from finishing 3rd. They pulled wins against USF and Pitt out of their rears too (classic meltdowns by those two teams), could have easily been 2-5.

That was a 3 way tie for the BE title where WVU won by a tie-breaker I believe? Then they went on to kick the sh*t out of Clemson in the bowl game.

It was. They smoked Clemson 70-33, and I think that embarrassment lit a fire under Clemson to bring them to the level they are now.

To be honest, it slipped by me as well that Tulane was actually getting respect. I guess that's because most of my perspective on that came from some of our realignment threads where it seemed like a majority here wished we could drop Tulane from the AAC. I thought I was in a small minority in thinking they could be pretty good if they found a good coach (which they seem to have done) who could capitalize on the fertile recruiting territory. Based upon the spread and the result I guess the curve was a lot further along on them than I realized. Good for Tulane, but at this point they've suddenly become a road game that probably worries everyone in the conference, especially the further away you are located (although a great road trip for fans if you can afford the time and money).

RE: Tulane defeats Houston - UCGrad1992 - 09-20-2019 11:30 AM

Coach Fritz has been a Steady Eddie indeed:

2016 4-8 [1-7] 6th West Division
2017 5-7 [3-5] 5th West Division
2018 7-6 [5-3] T 1st West, Cure Bowl Win
2019 3-1 [1-0]

They played Auburn respectable on the road in a losing effort 24-6. A lot of football to be played and Tulane has a brutal schedule remaining but definitely a program on the up and up [until Fritz leaves].
