Lots of New Offers - HaymondAtThe4 - 09-12-2019 11:51 PM

http://verbalcommits.com/schools/western-michigan

Going after guys with lots of offers, including some from big name schools. We have an offer out to that Foster Wonders from the UP who I have heard of before. That Nicholson kid from Clarkston still has very Dugan-esque offers, but he's not from Otsego, so we're probably out of luck there. I like that we're in on guys who might be out of our league. Maybe something happens down the road and Coach Saddi brings them in as high profile transfers in a few years! A boy can dream.

I told the staff to offer Nicolson 2 years ago. They didn't respond. He likely ends up at Northwestern. 7 foot and VERY athletic, unlike anything we have ever had. Same school as Pokley From a few years back. They have 2 sophomores that they should be considering as well at the guard position.

Nicolson was previously at Breakfast with Broncos & quite sure he was offered same weekend.
WMU was in first 2-3 to offer

How are we going to get good players when our staff has 1 year contracts? Recruits want stability.

Yep, and this was literally a year after I sent the staff an email and told them to offer. He was WAY under the radar, by the time he broke out, the whole world offered including us.

He did commit to Northwestern.

Lol. The game has changed with transfer portal. 900 D1 players transferred so far. That is stability? Incoming freshman all are on to the portal game these days. Expect 3-4 player movements per D-1 team every season and the record proves that. Gone are the days the rosters stay the same other than senior graduation losses.

Did you think WMU2013 was talking about "roster stability"?

Foster Wonders (2021) visiting this weekend

I don't know but I was. Compare MAC rosters from opening day 2018 to opening 2019. This isn't a WMU only issue despite what some might believe.

This is about accepting and adapting to a new reality. in a way, it becomes part of the discussion about whether we have student athletes, whether players should be payed, etc.

So each year there is a reset of rosters. Each school may lose, or each school may win. There is also the thing about some players committing to a school and an education (we do pretty good on that front overall!) while other players are kind of only in it for the glory to find their best spot to play a sport this season.

In my mind I wonder how the dynamics change on a team. Are some players part of a Bronco "core" and plan to stay, while others are going 1 year at a time and are more committed to themselves? How do the two groups interact? Do coaches treat each group differently? How do you treat an injury situation where the coach thinks the injured player is only staying for rehab and will transfer next season? do you just put them on a shelf and give them only minor attention? dump them for a new player immediately?

Will take some adaptation methinks. Until coaches become competent and comfortable with this, some schools will be at a disadvantage. Some schools already do this, 1 and done is pretty normal at some schools.

Agreed. Fans want the core of their team together season to season. What percentage of freshmen in 2009 stayed at same school for four years vs 2019 same duration? It's a different world today. All 5th years are free agents and if your story is good enough underclassmen can transfer and play without sitting a year. No WMU BB coach will ever see his roster stay intact with same underclassmen year to year again. Impossible with these liberal transfer rules.

RE: Lots of New Offers - ess - 09-30-2019 06:46 PM

"Roster stability"

That's funny.

Folks (some) want to blame kids for transferring.

Fair enough.

But

Coaches run kids off every year to clear cap space.

And coaches leave kids/teams all the time for "greener pastures".

They aren't victims.
