New Conference for NMSU - dancingNMSUaggie - 09-03-2019 11:00 AM

In a recent Moccia interview he revealed he is about to hire some hot shot who has lots of connections whose full time job is to find a new conference for NMSU. I have been told the priority is get a new conference for all sports or at least find a conference for just football. This is all here say but some pretty connected people have told me these things:

1. Looking for a new conference for all sports

2. Looking for a conference for football and leaving other sports in WAC or finding a new conference as well for Oly sports. This scenario includes GCU and NMSU going as a package deal.

3. Olympic sports going to MWC and forming a scheduling alliance with them for football but staying independent

Lots gonna happen in near future and the WAC and Hurd are not gonna like it.

Good info. Thanks for sharing.

New Conference for NMSU - Johnny Crunch - 09-03-2019 11:06 AM

So by process of elimination let's see which conferences might be a possibility.

These can be ruled out:
SEC
Big12
ACC
Big10
AAC

That leaves
CUSA
SunBelt
MAC

I dont know if the MWC has said hell no or not

That's it for football playing FBS correct?

Seems like SunBelt with a) only 10 members and b) the executioner of the WAC no longer there would be somewhat more likely

That all sounds really nice, but what G5 conference is looking to expand? Certainly not CUSA, with 14 schools. Sun Belt is happy with ten and would not consider adding a school that does not bring additional revenue. The MWC has 12 schools for football and would also not consider adding a school that does not bring additional revenue.

Olympic sports going to the MWC? So what additional revenue would that bring the MWC? The whole idea of adding Gonzaga to the MWC was about money. The MWC wanted to increase TV revenue and improve NCAA tournament revenue. Gonzaga would have done that. NMSU would not at this point.

For NMSU to find a new conference, they have to bring something that the conference does not have or needs more of. It is probably not going to be football. It has to be basketball. A couple of sweet sixteen runs would be a start. An elite eight run would help. A final four run would really help. Those two missed free throws against Auburn by Terrell Brown really hurt last season, along with Queen missing a wide open three. Auburn goes to the final four and barely loses to Virginia, when Kyle Guy hit his three free throws to beat Auburn 63-62.

NMSU's basketball program has to make it a no-brainer for the Sun Belt or MWC to add NMSU athletics for all sports. I think they have to win NCAA tournament basketball games to do that.

Now that Ahole Benson is gone Sun Belt is the likely target for Football or even all sports. MWC did not say hell no to our Olympic sports. Conf USA is also another target.

Unless the MWC sheds Hawaii and San Jose State from the conference, I don't see Thompson interested in adding NMSU (Olympic sports only) and GCU.

The reason the Sun Belt would considering adding NMSU is if they feel the Aggie basketball program would bring notoriety to the conference; with post season appearances.

As for C-USA, I don't see them adding NMSU unless they shrink down below 12 members. NMSU would need help from the AAC raiding C-USA for members. UConn leave the AAC could helped NMSU's chances a little.

RE: New Conference for NMSU - TOPSTRAIGHT - 09-03-2019 02:34 PM

Everyone already realizes this but I''ll restate.

The ONLY way C-USA even considers NMSU is if they plan some new divisional set-up with very limited crossover play.

*ALSO*

Even if that plan came about it would require UTEP to approve and accept the Aggies as a travel partner along with some sort of long term agreement for the Miners to stay in the league or suffer a huge iron clad buy-out. If C-USA added NMSU as part of some divisional deal the worst thing would be if UTEP bolted for the MWC at a later time.

I’m sure Hurd and the WAC know NMSU is going to leave at some point...it’s pretty much a given. The WAC has NMSU as the anchor until they get more schools in to be well and good for without them.

Great points fellow posters. I guess only time will tell!

Kind reminder, this is not a thread for half baked theories on conference expansion. Any post like that will be unapproved.

Keep it to the OP.

I wonder who NMSU will hire? Pacific hired the former Stanford AD. Then a within a few years, Pacific went from the Big West to the WCC! Why? The Pacific AD and the WCC Commish at the time, were good friends.

Maybe NMSU will hire somebody with Sun Belt or CUSA or MWC in-roads to the those conferences.

I guess nothing ever happened with the Horizon expanding west!

There is no way the MWC would take NMSU over BYU, UTEP-who doesn't fit regionally in CUSA or Gonzaga for all sports!

I thought the one of the dumbest things the NCAA did was allow 10 team conferences to have a championship game! But, I guess when you're a P5 conference the NCAA listens. If the Sun Belt wants to get back to 12 football schools, NMSU and Liberty are the two indys that would fit the bill.

RE: New Conference for NMSU - NMSUPistolPete - 09-03-2019 05:44 PM

Having a perennially bad football program and being located in a poor sparsely populated State will always be NMSU's Achilles heel. NMSU's only hope to better it's conference situation is to build a dominant basketball; Gonzaga level good. It can be done but it requires a special coach (like Chris Jans) sticking around awhile so "national" credibility takes root... and conference suitors come knocking on NMSU's door.

RE: New Conference for NMSU - Hilldog - 09-03-2019 05:49 PM

Gonzaga has been able to keep Few because they paid him as much as some P5 coaches. Can NMSU do the same?

Gonzaga didn't build its' program overnight. Few's salary is reflective of a well establish basketball program (TV revenue, multiple deep runs in the NCAA tourney, knocking off P5 programs regularly). Gonzaga's success started with Don Monson at the helm over 20 years ago. And, Gonzaga "first" NCAA appearance happened as recently 1995 under Dan Fitzgerald. I'm sure the Gonzaga Administration was not paying Fitzgerald or Monson nearly as much as they are paying Few now. Can NMSU keep Jans awhile? I don't know. But the longer we can keep him, he will move the Aggie program in the same direction as Gonzaga. Already, NMSU has beaten Illinois and Miami under Jans' watch. And NMSU was within a play or two of upsetting USC, Kansas, and Auburn.

So no reunion with NMSU? 03-weeping

RE: New Conference for NMSU - Country_Wisdom_359 - 09-03-2019 06:43 PM

Being a fan of Middle Tennessee in football, I can tell you that many members of CUSA are angry with the complete and total apathy and incompetency shown by the commissioner. The TV deals have tanked. Right now it’s mostly on stadium and Facebook live. Not exactly a place where a conference with aspirations of sending a team to a New Years bowl needs or wants to be.

Point being... even though there’s a potential home for FBS football, it’s not as rosy a place to be as others might think. Stable for now... but when you’re battling the SunBelt for next to worst conference every year, it’s hardly a destination. Only real advantage is the number of bowl game slots.

Are travel subsidies out of the equation? Because in 2015 NMSU bribed the Sun Belt with $2.4 million in travel subs over the course of several years, to join in all sports. And the SBC said no.

Gonzaga also lost Monson to Minnesota! The point is if Jans starts to have Gonzaga like results, will NMSU be able to match the salaries that other schools will be offering? I think it is unrealistic to think Jans will stay over the long term. If he was in a stable conference, that maybe one thing.

RE: New Conference for NMSU - Hilldog - 09-04-2019 12:47 AM

Why would NMSU and GCU be a package deal? Both seem to have too many differences. Public/private. Little money/lots of money. Football/no football.

RE: New Conference for NMSU - HawaiiMongoose - 09-04-2019 03:45 AM

Any change in conference affiliation for NMSU would need to be a two-way street. It's not enough for NMSU to want a change. And like some of the other posters, I don't see a likely scenario in which another conference has an incentive to add NMSU.
