Akron football chatter - Smaug - 09-02-2019 11:55 AM

Most active board I could find. Not much UAB chatter so far (and by "not much" I mean any).

Will probably peek in as the week wears on.

I saw a couple under the 2019 Opponent Watch topic - 1 of 2 things - either they'll stomp us as they see results of ASU (North Alabama???) game or "don't count your chickens". Most seem to be talking about UMass

UAB opens -8.5 at Akron

-9.5 is what I'm seeing. The Zips didn't bring a couple of their best defensive players vs. Illinois, maybe just to avoid a senseless injury. New HC from UT-Chattanooga, former NFL backup to Peyton Manning. It will be interesting to see how they look at home vs. another G5.

Akron blow out at a bad Big10 opponent.
UAB struggled with a middle of the road SWAC opponent at home.

I'm not sure that either team learned enough from week one to make many bold predictions in week 2.

I'll predict a close victory for the Blazers, but wouldn't be shocked by a 3 TD game (either way)

Given our history in week 2. I don’t expect things to be clicking nor for us to open the playbook. I don’t know what’s hard about running your stuff. Why is it that others run all their stuff and score in bunches from week to week early on but we just want to manage to squeak a win out? Does it not help to have the kinks worked out and become a well oiled machine?

Take Akron in the line. I say UAB wins 24-17. Down goes the week 2 curse.

We had guys all over the field playing their first game next to the guys on either side of them.

Saturday will be their second such game.

We could use more 16-17 class guys more. Think we should’ve opened up the playbook more myself TJ has been here three plus years now. Still waiting on a RB rotation can’t believe Stanley didn’t get a carry.

Agree. Would like to have seen Stanleys speed out of the backfield.

Come on, now. I thought us being more talented than last year was supposed to make up for inexperience. Then when Inexperience shows itself, “we played bad because of vanilla play calling”.

Akron football chatter - Smaug - 09-02-2019 08:52 PM

Talent also needs experience.

Vanilla play calling is almost always a given in these games. Sometimes that doesn't matter, sometimes it does. We don't want to open our playbook up against an FCS team though, that's for sure.

I think the talent thing is being looked at two different ways. We lost a lot of elite players last year, and I think we tend to undersell that as a whole. Our roster overall may be better this year, but we don't have guys who are capable of filling those shoes all by themselves at the moment. Maybe things will get better as the year goes on. Maybe a combination of two players can make up for the loss of one over the course of the year. Maybe our backup linemen are closer to our starters now. The biggest takeaway after week 1 is we just don't know. Before the season I had this team pegged at 8-4 give or take a game. I still think that's pretty realistic. Clark is the one constant we've had in the program, and he has done nothing to show he isn't capable of guiding this team and getting them ready to play each week.

Smaug is 100% correct about experience though. We are a very young team in terms of it, and it's going to show at times. Hopefully we get better each week, because that shows the experience thing is working out.

Think the Coaches played with what they had ready to put on the field. See they the coaches are just like the players they were use to last years team and this is knot last years team. Hopefully they will be more ready to trust to put of the field. Week one from to week two is a big learning experience. Don't think the Blazers will see the same speed this Saturday but will see it on the outside and more Beef up front. On Both Sides. Should see excitement to get on the road and away and look forward to come back home. See how each team reactacts should be interesting Akron played a Big 10 and the Blazers played the speed of the Hornets. Should be a interesting Matchup Akron is at home the Blazers are on the road. Would expect the young guys to grow up like real quick.

This is year two of this offense. What do you guys mean when you say open it up? What are we trying to hide?

RE: Akron football chatter - Big Dee - 09-03-2019 02:51 PM

I just want to see TJ make some sorta jump he’s been here for four years and it’s like we still have training wheels on for him. Let him be the gunslinger he maybe can be, and make some throws he probably shouldn’t make to see where he’s at. No more games where he’s second in carries is a start.

Now I'm worried. Not one poster on the MACbbs board has picked Akron to beat UAB. Not one..............
