Now I know how Vanderbilt must feel in SEC coverage. I feel like ESPN has gone out of their way to **** on GT and the spread against Clemson in pretty much all the coverage. Rece Davis chuckling, "Oh yeah Georgia Tech will be there for the game too."

RE: Open Thread - 2019 Football - Week 1 - georgia_tech_swagger - 08-29-2019 05:49 PM

GameDay referred to GT as cannon fodder. Then why bother showing up for the game? Pretty sure there's been more coverage of Vigo the Carpathian entering the stadium than the entire GT program.

If they pull of the unthinkable I hope Collins opens his presser by just staring at the press for 10 minutes and then asking in a confused Travolta like fashion, "I thought this was a scrimmage? Was there an opponent?"

Special teams still special for GT.
You can definitely see the talent disparity too.

Is there a game going on? I've been too distracted by the Clemson infomercial. At least the ACCN has figured out what sport is being played right now. As bad as this is to watch it's far better than seeing a special on Roy Williams eating breakfast cereal.

Clemson has dramatically more speed.

The GT defense is definitely less Ted Roof-ish. I see actual blitzing. And while they look much better at tackling in space than last year, they also look much worse at not losing contain than last year. Special teams is just as catastrophically awful as it was last year. Maybe they'll get that out of their system in Week 1 instead of handing USF 2 or 3 free touchdowns again next week. Tobias Oliver looks like a QB that hasn't passed in years. Because he hasn't. And I'm not impressed with the playbook on offense so far .... it's one step away from the wildcat every snap out there.

Also not a fan of running the hurry up on offense when you've left your defense on the field all first half. Also not a fan of the play calls out of it being repeated QB sneak. Also not happy with the care free handling of the football handing Clemson a minimum of 3 free points.

Well that pile of garbage sates my desire to watch further.

Offense: D
Defense: C+
Special Teams: F

Not glad in the least we could be Rece Davis' and ESPN's cannon fodder for 5 hours of primetime television. Given that most of the coverage of GT is "there's no option" and "everybody else is thrilled there's no option" and "they're going to be down 40 points by ... which quarter?" I expect this game to shelve any national interest in the program. They could be 5-1 headed to Coral Gables in mid-October and not a soul beyond the white and gold will know. Also I despise Mark Richt, he's a smug dick on the TV. I preferred him being quiet and perpetually harried by UGAg fans.

Well this is going how I expected it to.

The GT QB is extremely fast and shifty.

Well congratulations to South Florida for the win next week.

They better not. If they lose next week then you can write this season off.

Then I hope the improvement from week 1 to week 2 is huge.

The answer to the question you're asking: GT's last shutout was in 1997.

I've been watching Cincinnati-UCLA. Year 2 of Chip Kelly doesn't look very revelatory for UCLA.

Holy crap, for a moment we looked like a real team.

I'm going to guess they finally tried an easy quick pass against Cover 0?

3 play drive for a TD. 54 yard pass, Power run, then an option pitch for the TD

UCLA has overthrown 14 points and counting. Cincinnati can't cover the TE, and UCLA can't throw to them downfield. Comical.

RE: Open Thread - 2019 Football - Week 1 - georgia_tech_swagger - 08-29-2019 09:43 PM

Cincinnati 24-14 final. Chip Kelly needs a QB. He still doesn't have one.

The Geoff Collins experience was on full display tonight I see.....

The defense was actually improved, though due to offensive ineptitude that didn't translate well onto the scoreboard. Special teams still look just as horrific. The jury is out on the offense. If what we saw was a write off game where they're feeling out who can do what on the field .... fine. If we're going to get infinite wildcat out of the shotgun a big thumbs down from me.

And he is actually doing a good job of recruiting. Collins has brought in a multiple of the number of 4* players in transfers and recruits than PJ got in the last decade in less than one cycle. And the straw that is stirring this drink isn't Collins ... it's George O'Leary. And O'Leary's first season was pretty brutal too, but it was a pretty clear trajectory from there forward. Tonight on the public relations front was a giant F. As for the immediate on the field product jury is out but eagerly waiting the USF result, as it will be a good comparison to last year's shortcomings and showing how this season will pan out against the Coastal ... which is several standard deviations crappier than Clemson.
